TUCSON 20, PHOENIX SOUTH MOUNTAIN 12

Tucson High School, coming off a controversial preseason with Richard Sanchezresigning his head coaching position, is off to a 2-1 start under interim coach Malcolm Nelsonand Sanchez’s former coaching staff following Friday night’s 20-12 win over visiting Phoenix South Mountain.

The Badgers have passed their win total of last year (1-9 record) and matched the last two years (2-10 record with shortened 2020 season because of COVID-19).

The Badgers’ start is their best since 2019, under Justin Argraves. They will attempt to start 3-0 with a win over their next opponent — Catalina Foothills, which defeated host Mica Mountain 29-26 on Friday night. The game will be at Catalina Foothills at 7 p.m.

Tucson took a 20-0 lead over South Mountain — coached by Arizona linebacker great Byron Evans— when Paul Gomezmade a highlight-reel one-handed 9-yard touchdown reception with 28 seconds left in the first half.

The Badgers held on despite South Mountain’s late rally, scoring its last touchdown with 1:19 left in the game on Caleb Palmer’s 1-yard run.

After South Mountain recovered the onside kick, Tucson High’s defense stopped the Jaguars (2-2) on fourth down at the Badgers’ 42-yard line.

Tucson’s other scores were a 1-yard run by Andres Gomezwith 7:20 left in the second quarter followed by Prince Mugisha’s8-yard run busting through the line with 5:05 remaining before halftime.
