The Pima men’s basketball team opened the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday with a 158-47 win against Community Christian College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
Pima opened with a 29-6 lead, making 10 of 15 shots from the floor and 3 for 5 from 3-point range. Pima shot 66 percent from the field in the first half and led 85-20 at halftime. They finished the game shooting 65 percent.
The Aztecs had nine players score in double figures led by sophomores Jaylen Alexanderand Dillan Baker(Salpointe). Alexander posted 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Baker also scored 20 points and went 6 for 9 from the field and 5 for 7 from 3-point range. He also had three assists and three steals.
Freshman Gabe Oldhamwent 6 for 8 from the field for 15 points and seven rebounds while fellow freshman Cohenj Gonzalesalso netted 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting to go along with six assists and five steals.
Sophomore Tanner Poeschladded 13 points after going 5 for 7 for the game. Sophomore Yahir Garcia(Tucson) and freshman Kota Bensoneach added 11 points. Benson, a former player at Baboquivari, also had seven assists.
Sophomore Moses Demalekand freshman Cooper Jones(Buena) each added 10 points.
The Aztecs will host the Pima Invitational from Nov. 9-11 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. They will play Wenatchee Valley (Wash.) College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
