Arizona ended the Crimson Classic with a tie against South Alabama, 1-1, in 11 innings on Sunday due to a drop-dead travel time on its final day at Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Wildcats (17-3-1) needed to head to Louisville to face the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They then have a neutral-site matchup with Miami (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Louisville.
Three Arizona players — Regan Shockley, Blaise Biringer(Cienega graduate) and Kaiah Altmeyer— had two hits each against South Alabama.
After 2 1/2 scoreless innings, Dakota Kennedysingled to score Shockey from second base for Arizona’s first run.
In the top of the fourth, South Alabama answered with a solo home run to tie the game.
Both teams held each other to one run the rest of regulation and forced the game into extra innings.
Through four extra innings, both teams held each scoreless until the game reached Arizona’s drop-dead time for travel.
In the circle, Miranda Stoddardpitched 8 1/3 innings, starting the game and then re-entering in the 11th inning. She struck out three Jaguars and allowed only one run. Mountain View grad Aissa Silva entered in relief in the eighth inning and struck out two batters in 2 1/3 innings.
