Numbers of the Day

  • The Wildcats’ shutout was their first in conference play since blanking Utah 8-0 on March 16, 2019.
  • Arizona extended its win streak in conference play to six games, its longest since winning eight in a row in 2021.

Arizona rode the strong start from right-hander Cam Waltyto win a 5-0 shutout victory over Cal to secure the road series win on Saturday afternoon.

Walty was dominant for the Wildcats (16-13, 9-5) to earn his fifth win of the year, going seven innings and allowing just six hits while striking out eight.

Only three times in seven innings did Cal (16-12, 5-9) move runners into scoring position against Walty, only to be turned away every time.

Right fielder Emilio Corona, formerly of Pima College, opened the scoring for Arizona with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning, his sixth home run of the season.

It would prove to be all the offense the Wildcats would need, though the Arizona lineup would go on to plate four more runs over the remainder of the game.

RBI singles from Richie Morales and Tommy Splaine, along with a sac fly from Morales and a throwing error by the Golden Bears rounded out the scoring.

Designated hitter  Xavier Esquer, returning home to the Bay area, where his dad David Esquercoaches Stanford, made just his second career start. He achieved his first two collegiate hits, one a double.

Right-hander Dawson Netz worked the final two innings for the Wildcats, allowing just one hit while striking out three to preserve the shutout.

Tommy Splainewent 3 for 4 with a run and RBI, Corona was 2 for 4 with his home run and an RBI, and Brendan Summerhillfinished 2 for 5 with a run and double.
