Bootlegs are available under a variety of different names, with
varying material, varying quality, etc. One good rule of thumb is
that you almost can't go wrong by buying CDs on the "Yellow Dog"
label-they pride themselves on having top notch quality. "Swingin'
Pig" did some great stuff as well. I'm not an expert on CDs,
because I don't collect them, just get tapes of the material.

A few recommendations of shows/material to look for (names of
bootlegs will vary, check the label:

Swedish Radio 1963-one of the best Beatle shows captured on tape.

Most of the old live Beatle bootlegs from the 70s (Shea, Tokyo,
Paris, etc.) are now floating around on video, so I wouldn't
recommend buying the audio. Most of the other shows on CD today are
bad performances, and really aren't worth getting, unless you're a
die hard collector. I'd recommend trying to find San Francisco '66,
for its historical value (their last concert). Hollywood Bowl '64
is an old standby-professionally recorded, and not too terrible of
a performance.

BBC Sessions, 1962-65-released as multivolume "Beatles at the Beeb"
and other names on other laGreat stuff, quality ranges from fair to
superb, and there are lots of songs the Beatles never made records
of.

Decca Auditions, 1962-There are so many screwed up albums and CDs of
this material, I can't recommend ANY of them. They came off a set of
45s released in the late 70s by Strawberry Fields Forever, a now-
defunct fanzine. See if you can borrow a set of the 45s and a
variable speed turntable, and make your own tape. Otherwise, you
might want to try Yellow Dog's CD-I think they made a half decent
version. The original discs are still the best, though, in my
opinion. Excellent quality tapes the Beatles made with Pete Best.

Unsurpassed Masters, Backtracks, etc., multiple volumes-All
excellent quality tapes of recording sessions from the EMI studio
vaults, 62-69. Fantastic.

Get Back Stereo Acetate-one of the first Bootlegs ever, and a must
have-contains the "original" version of the Let it Be album.

Sessions LP-supposedly a never released proposed 80s Beatle LP of
unreleased material. There are several different versions around,
with slightly different songs. All are good. A must have.

Get Back sessions-released as "Sweet Apple Trax" "Hot as Sun" and
a variety of other names, this is tape made off the films that were
used to make the "Let it Be" movie. Some of it is very interesting,
some not. Usually good quality, though.

This doesn't include solo material, or "odds and sods" type albums
like "The Beatles vs. Don Ho," but it ought to get you started.

EMI should issue these recordings. If no official release is in
order (which it never has been) then perhaps these would make a good
boot. If there's anyone from EMI reading this - please issue these
songs. If there's someone out there who makes bootlegs, I suggest to
you these songs for a new bootleg, perhaps a 2CD set) They are
arranged alphabetically just because.

All You Need is Love (TV Broadcast)
Bad to Me
Besame Mucho
Can't Buy Me Love (take 2)
Child of Nature
Colliding Circles
Come and Get it
Goodbye
How Do You Do It
I Hate To See the Evening Sun Go Down
I Lost My Little Girl
If You've Got Troubles (take 1)
I'm Looking Through You ("remake" as on UM2)
Leave My Kitten Alone
Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues
Norwegian Wood aka This Bird Has Flown (take 1)
Not Guity (as on UM6)
One after 909 (complete edited version)
One and One is Two
She's A Woman (take 7)
Something (the version where Geo. is still working on the words)
Sour Milk Sea
Strawberry Fields Forever (acoustic)
Strawberry Fields Forever (take 1)
Teddy Boy
That Means A Lot (take 2)
What's the New Mary Jane (take 4 as on UM4)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic as on UM7)
12 Bar Original

As I said, EMI should release these recordings so that, should a CD
like this appear, they would get the money instead of bootleggers.

Since bootlegs are illegal anyway, why not bootleg bootlegs? It
seems like these are songs that most everyone interested in the
unreleased material of the Beatles would want. If someone made a
bootleg like this, then it would sell a lot of copies because it
would appeal to 1) collectors 2) people who are not into collecting
but still love the Beatles enough to buy one bootleg and 3) people
who don't have enough money to buy all the bootlegs necessary to get
all these songs.

Any ideas for additions or changes to the list?
