Who doesn't love a day at the seaside? Ice cream, arcades, stick of rock, pint of whelks and even a game of bingo, if you please.I can't say I'm a regular bingo player. Isn't a dabber a small fish found in the North sea, a stone's throw from the Golden Mile at Great Yarmouth? The amusements are a hive of activity. Walking past the Mint arcade I hear random numbers being called. ''Legs eleven.''The time it takes to register a winner I hear the shout: ''Full House!'' Who doesn't love to win at a game of luck? I often say about gambling: ''Sometimes you just need a little bit of luck.''It made some lucky punters millionaires.A few of my favourite bingo calls include: Man Alive (5)Doctor's Orders (9)Duck And Dive (25) Dirty Girtie (30) Get Up And Run (31) To test your bingo calling knowledge, I wonder if you know the following number from these calls?Queen Bee? Top Of The Shop?Staying Alive? To be fair, I'm such a beginner that I had n

Gambling: Money, Sex & Revenge

You may be asking what's that all about? These three, innocent or not, words are behind just about every murder. Thankfully, I have never been involved with anything like that not being a money-seeking, sexual deviant with an inkling for revenge. I say that tongue in cheek. Out of the three, I would opt for money, without menaces. I really need to change the subject before I dig myself into a hole. Six-feet deep?If money, sex and revenge are the motivation for murder, I wonder what is the motivation(s) for most gamblers?Money (yes), sex (I don't think so), revenge (I can't quite see how that would work). Here goes my three motivations:Money, Passion (not sex) & Achievement. Not in any particular order, although money is a big motivation because as the saying goes: ''Money makes the world go round...''You may have noticed my list of three is lacking in some way. I wonder what would be your list of motivations. The why of behaviour. Let's face it, without motiv

If you love your horse racing then you must have heard about @racingblogger. To be honest, I hadn't seen or heard much of him. A year or so back I noticed Bloggsy (as he is often called) on my Twitter timeline. Someone must have shared a post. I said: ''Whose that bloke with the most fashionable hair in racing, at some Irish racecourse, Guinnes in hand and cheering home a nice winner. He had a laddish entourage shouting in harmony, all having the time of their life.'' The post was muted but it all looked good fun. In many respects Racing Blogger is a new kid on the block, starting his Twitter account back in 2016. As he said it started on a cold, winters, day at Kempton Park. In that short time he has achieved over 57K f

Hitting the Proverbial Gambling Wall

When you think about gambling, what comes to mind?We know the betting part. That's important to our success or failure but there's much more to it than that. I always use to think the only person who kept a journal was some old bloke who lived on the moors, wore a hand-knitted jumper, and had a bird book in the side pocket of his anorak. The thought of detailing your stream of consciousness has a touch of the hippie mindset if not new-age thinking, therapy, bordering on mumbo jumbo. However, we can learn something from everyone and, hopefully, more importantly, about ourselves. We think we know ourselves but do we really? It's a strange happening but we see those around us falling in the same hole time after time. It's as though their life is following a set pattern, cycle, or route which we can see perfectly well but they are strangely unconscious of their journey which says turn right. They simply never consider turning left or going straight ahead. It's like

With races coming thick and fast this season, punters know they have unlimited chances to place winning bets. At different venues across the US, some of the nation’s top horses compete for honours. Just because you cannot be physically present at the horseracing venues, doesn't mean you cannot partake in the thrill of picking the winning horses. Below we share the daily picks of US races based on stats and current form so that you can place your bets confidently without having to watch how the horses perform at a land-based venue. Louisiana Downs At the Louisiana Downs, there will be seven races throughout the day. The first race features a couple of horses that dropped in grade that are also tipped as the favourites. One of these horses is Chick Lips who finished in a respectable eighth position. Going into this race, Chick Lips is the preferred choice, but he faces stiff competition from RootnandToon. The second race is a bit of a rivalry between Fast Dashing Candy and Ka

Who is the First Female Jockey to Complete the Grand National?
By:

APR

If you love the Grand National you may know the answer to this question. The Grand National is one of those races which unites the populous. The housewives favourite. That's what they say. Horse racing has been very much a man's world. However, it is no longer the domain of the few. As the saying goes: ''The female of the species is more deadly than the male.'' When it comes to riding skills you have only to look at the success of leading female jockeys from across the word to see not only are they equal they often surpass. Charlotte Brew paved the way in 1977 when she was the first female rider to compete in the Grand National on her own horse Barony Fort. In 1982, Geraldine Rees took up the baton and rode a horse named Cheers who finished in 8th place behind Grittar. Rees competed the following year when riding Midday Welcome who fell. The opportunity for female jockeys to compete in the Grand National has seen a steady stream of runners including R

So the Cheltenham Festival has come and gone. I looked at the results rather than watch the races but took an interest. I read the latest blog post written by Graham on pgstipsracing.com as he knows a lot about the National Hunt and detailing that Irish-trained horses won 23 of the 28 races at the Cheltenham Festival. A pretty dire result for the English-trained (not forgetting Scotland and Wales). It looks like the English trainers and racing calendar have some work to do. It seems that it's too easy for the better English National Hunt horses to keep out of the way of each other and pick up price money but this leads to less competitive races and horses with some limitation compared to their opposition from the Emerald Isle. It's not a subject I have much idea about. It is great to see the start of the Flat turf season take place at Doncaster's Lincoln meeting on the 27th March. My focus was on the first two-year-old race which saw Eve Johnson Houghton's Chipotle win we

It's a rivalry which has lasted generations. Guess what? It's not going to stop until the dust has settled at the Cheltenham Festival. This year, not only have we got to consider which horse may win the Gold Cup but learn a little bit about the Sport of Kings from the West Ham football team. Sounds different, well wait until you watch the video. Egged on by commentator Richard Hoiles, it's both informative and very humourous. Betway Horse Racing have asked the opinions of the English and Irish players in a racing-themed game show. It's time to get your teeth into the Betway Bumper. If you want to have a laugh and learn what famous footballers have to say then you've come to the right place. They've got some hidden talents!Take a gander.

A 1m 2f Novice Stakes on standard going. This looks a tricky race. If considering betting, I would wait until the betting settles because it is likely to help. Sometimes, as proverb says: ''Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can, always in a [fill in the blank] never in a man.We know no man, apart from me, uttered those words. For a seven-runner race, we have a lot going on here and it may well be the case a few trainers fancy their chances. That's why it may pay to let the betting settle as it could weed out a few weak links and help clarify the situation. Gooner Boy is a well-bred colt, a son of Sea The Stars, out of a winning mare who raced at Group class. In the familiar silks of Amo Racing Limited, this March foal cost 260,000 gns at the yearling sales. John Gosden's debutantes can go well if starting favourite or short odds. Conversely, if weak in the betting it could indicate a few others hold claims. David Simcock does well with his horse

What I enjoy about two-year-old horse racing is that it is full of surprises, potential, hope and dreams. I'm not saying that other age groups of horses don't have a similar feel because horses will always surprise. The handicapper which goes from a 50-rating to 100. From plating races to listed class. However, those who love two-year-old racing know that it is a fleeting time. I, personally, only work within this niche. When then next Flat turf season arrives it is a blank slate for me to write the names of new stars of the future. I follow this subject matter to the highest of standards. I managed to achieve a 2:1 degree in reading Psychology at the Open University. This racing knowledge far exceeds any academic endeavour I have followed. It is a battle of wits: HCE Vs Bookmakers (layers). Sometimes they win - sometimes they lose. Long term I bet myself to beat anyone else who tries to lay horses against me. Why am I confident? Because I work harder than most peop

New Queen Mother Champion Chase Contenders for 2021

The two-mile steeplechase division in British jumps horse racing has been dominated by Altior and a lesser extent Politologue in recent years, but neither are getting any younger. It may be time for new horses to emerge and grab the spotlight in the Queen Mother Champion Chase come the Cheltenham Festival. With that in mind, here are some of the contenders for this year’s big race. Chacun Pour Soi But for a last-minute injury that ruled him out of Cheltenham last year, Chacun Pour Soi would have been Champion Chase favourite despite the fact that trainer Willie Mullins hasn’t won the race just yet. If the Irish master handler can keep this horse fit and sound into the spring, then that is the prominent position he should occupy again. A three-time Grade 1 winner in the Emerald Isle, Chacun Pour Soi could improve on that record by making a successful defence of his Dublin Chase crown at Leopardstown en route to Cheltenham. He is very lightly-raced for a nine-y

NEW DISTANCES AT FAKENHAM
By:

JAN

Exeter will not be the only course getting some of that Tuesday action, as Fakenham is also set for some turf action with seven races on the cards. The crowd should be present for this one, including free tea, coffee, and hot drinks from one of the carts on the course. The weather is predicted to be sunny and clear skies, while new rules have come into force and all distances have been increased by at least 80 yards for all the races, with the fourth race of the day getting the biggest addition at +148 yards. Some qualifiers and GBB races in this one, and should make for an interesting watch with Cheltenham and the Grand National in mind as the early big names of the calendar. As the landscape of sports continues to change due to covid-19 and now the presence of vaccines, the hope is that the Grand National streaming and other big-name events will be only for the international audience. The race day at Fakenham will be a seven-race event, with four class races making the most headlines

You can almost taste the Grand National and Aintree now with January rolling to an end. The year has already been very rich in races and excitement and Aintree drawing close will only be more of the same as everyone from the trainers, jockeys, to fans and punters will be looking to make adjustments with an eye on that early April meeting. Aintree is not the busiest racecourse of the year, opening its doors a few times over the course of the calendar, so it is always a special occasion to be had. This year’s event is still under the threat of the coronavirus and how unpredictable the spikes have been. In that light, the authorities will always have guidelines updated for fans to follow, while hoping the vaccine makes a difference and allows for the kind of presence and energy that comes from having fans on the racecourse. For punters, there will be more than enough horse racing to get the adrenaline going over what is sure to be a spectacular three days at Aintree. The first

January is now past us and the novelty of the new year is wearing out, and we are shifting into routine mode, which means looking forward to Cheltenham again for the festival. A 7f Novice Stakes. This post is more about Sir Mark Prescott than the rest of the field. In truth, it doesn't look the strongest of races. A 10-horse Novice on standard to slow going. I often think betting on any debutante is either the best or worst idea you ever had. In truth, it is much easier for any horse to win second start compared with first. I know a few of you will say well this trainer or that does exceptionally well. You're correct, they do. However, if you are looking at winning and losing in general terms you have your work cut out.In fact, I could show many statistics that would most likely put you off betting on debutante for life. It wouldn't be a bad thing if I did. Sir Mark Prescott is one of many trainers who I would be hard pressed to bet when making their debut. My data goes back to 2006 and I update every scrap of information for Prescott's two-year-olds covering the Flat turf season. You don't need to be Einstein to work out Polar Ic

A 5f Maiden Stakes. Eight three-year-olds+ take their chance. Not the easiest race to assess but a couple of horses which may well go close. Tom Clover is a very capable trainer and Rockett Man is a chestnut son of Equiano in the ownership of The Rogues Gallery who do well with their horses. He has run over 6f on two starts and shown ability. He looks a nice horse, who had good pace last time out, when leading until outpaced in the final furlong. There is always a chance when a horse drops down in distance, it will be outpaced. There is a big difference between running over five and six furlongs. To be fair, this doesn't look as tough a race as competed last time out and the booking of a 7lb apprentice gives additional hope of a bold show. A live chance. In ways, Stuart William's Tributo is similar. This son of Dragon Pulse was a £28,000 2yo breeze-up purchase who was well fancied on debut at Newcastle when starting 100/30. This April foal looked inexpe

Three maidens on the cards today.Just a quick note...12:35 Lingfield - Mystical Air has very good claims over this one mile trip. Roger Varian has been a touch hit and miss of late. This well-bred daughter of Kingman out of a listed-winning mare races in the familiar silks of Lordship Stud. Not much of a price so I won't be betting unless drifting markedly. 1:05 Lingfield - Hugo Palmer has been in flying form this season and his strike rate with two-year-old on their second start has been exceptional. Ocean Road ran a nice race on debut for owners Qatar Racing Ltd. This son of Australia could start odds on for this race and on the stats may be under priced. 5:00 Kempton - This six-furlong race looks open and no particular views. Illuzi has fair place claims for William Jarvis and one of his best owners Ms E L Banks. This bay daughter of Kodiac cost 60,000 guineas at the yearling sales. The mare won on here second start when in training with Alan Jarvi

Not too much going on today but a couple of horses worth noting. 2:40 Newcastle - It's an interesting fact that certain horse owners just don't have bad horses and that is very much the case for Lord Lloyd Webber. Added to this point, Darlectable You, is a very well-bred filly the daughter of Group-winning Dar Re Mei, who was an excellent talent running seventeen times in her four-season career, achieving successes at the highest level and total earning of £2,698,880. This globe trotter made her presence felt wherever she traveled. An exceptional horses who has been the dam of rare talents such as Too Darn Hot, So Mi Dar & Lah Ti Dar. Darlectable You is sires by Dubawi and you can safely say if this bay filly went through the sales she would have fetched near the million mark. John Gosden trains this exiting prospect who is fancied in the betting. If starting 6/4 and less SP I'd except this April foal to win. If a touch weak in the betting,

A quick look at Wednesday's two-year-old (2yo) racing. There are four juvenile races at Kempton. I'm not sure how many of these I will write about - time will tell. 4:55 Kempton - If Andrew Balding's Napper Tandy drifts markedly in the betting, this colt may hold fair each-way claims. Even though racing over a mile, a wide draw (11) isn't the best starting point. It may help with regards to the price. Hugo Palmer's two-year-olds have been in sparkling form all season and Mused should be respected after a beaten favourite on debut. Not much in the way of a price at a fraction over even money but a horse that should take some beating from a prime draw. 5:25 Kempton -Echo Beach is looking for a win are four creditable but losing performances. 5:55 Kempton - Rebel's Romance comes here after winning on debut and looking to make it two from two under a penalty. 6:25 Kempton - Daddy Frank, a son of Frankel, in the ownership of John And Tanya Gunthe

Quite a restricted auction stakes race over 6f.A mix of two-year-olds including a couple of winners with penalties. The betting would suggest Copinet and Castana Dia are the major hopes. Both ran well on their last starts giving the impression much better will be seen today. Chris Wall is a consistent trainer of juveniles - although not the biggest string - and the stable must have been disappointed last time out at Wolverhampton when starting favourite. A slow start made this daughter of Dandy Man's chances remote. She couldn't catch Bravado, who was similarly slow from the stalls, but ran on with gusto and looked almost certain to have won if starting on terms. There's always a fear she will be tardy once again although I'm sure Wall will have been working on this problem at home. I'd expect this March foal to go well and being running on strongly to the line. James Fergusan has done well this first season and proven he can send out a debut winner. Talented two-ye

Just a couple of maiden races today. 4:25 Newcastle - Roger Varian's Movin Time wasn't fancied in the betting on debut but ran a sterling race when second behind Reble's Romance at Newcastle when priced 22/1. Making his return over course and distance, this son of Fastnet Rock should be primed and although not much of a price should take some beating. John Gosden's Mithras has a disaster second time out when priced 4/6. Connections have opted for the tongue tie which suggests this son of Dubawi had a breezing problem but better should be seen today. He was entered for the Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) which shows the stable rate this horse. Sir Michael Stoute has had a so so season with his juveniles. Diamonds And King hasn't been seen for a couple of months after a slightly disappointing debut. The betting is key and if weak in the betting I wouldn't be betting on this horse although if strong has sound each-way claims. The rest of the horses in this race don't lo

A pretty low-class race over 6f. The betting suggests this is a five-horse race. The Karl Burke two-year-olds are still, in my opinion, out of form. Capla Dream looked almost a certainty when going clear of the field over this course when over 7f. Dropping back in distance, this daughter of Dream Ahead looks to enjoy the surface and should go well. Black Sparrow is a speedy horse who has run consistently over five-furlongs, although running well on debut at six furlongs. This black filly won well on her fourth start and didn't do anything wrong last time out at Wolverhampton. A win penalty didn't seem to diminish her pace last time ridden by Grace McEntee who is enjoying this partnership. There is a slight concern the win penalty will be a burden on this surface over this extended distance. However, Black Sparrow is likely to give a good account and could well hold a healthy advantage in the final furlong. Seaclusion has run three times. She finished last on her de

A couple of two-year-old races worth of closer inspection. 1:25 Leicester - Heavy going, so take note of the horse wearing the Wellington boots, or hooves the size of dinner plates. If neither of those appears you may take a gander at Richar Fahey's Rhode Island Girl. Paul Hanagan takes the ride on this daughter of Dark Angel who is out of a four-time winning mare, a debut winner, who tasted victory twice at Group 3. Fahey has done well with his two-year-olds this season with the likes of Fev Rover, Umm Kultham and the potential top-notch Faora. Todays' contest doesn't look the strongest of fields. There has been good money for Karl Burke's Celestial Storm, in the familiar silks of Clipper Logistics Ltd. To be fair, this daughter of Dark Angel (yes, they're popular) didn't do much on debut when pretty fancied in the betting on heavy going. So whether these conditions are good, bad or ugly, time will tell. It will be interesting to see how Tom Ward's D
