Coined ‘E.D.I.T’, the new standard shines a light on the need for employees to THRIVE in addition to being a part of a diverse, equal and inclusive work culture.
Said Sheldon Scott who created Eaton Workshop: “Eaton’s commitment to our team members and understanding the complex diversity of global communities are core to our hospitality practice. Creating a true sense of welcome is what our guests feel when they enter our spaces. That’s a direct result of the work we’ve put into Eaton’s unique EDIT (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Thriving) curriculum that provides everyone at Eaton with the training and insight needed to build a more equitable world. And like all things, equity begins at home. This is why we are committed to the thriving of all who work at Eaton, as the only way to ensure our guests have meaningful experiences is to have team members who can show up as their best selves.
The results speak for themselves: two-thirds of our global leadership are people of color and two-thirds are women—unheard of in the hospitality industry. We’ve been certified by the DC Mayor’s Trans Employment program as well as Hong Kong’s Most Inclusive Places to Work,” says Sheldon Scott, Head of Purpose, Eaton Workshop.
Eaton currently has properties in Hong Kong and Washington D.C, with Eaton Toronto expected to open in the future. A number of purposeful practices and initiatives have been put in place to ensure a thriving employee culture across both and future locations.
Eaton inspires its employees by ensuring diverse representation amongst third party vendors and its internal workforce, in line with the local community make up. A sliding scale pricing model minimizes economic barriers for employees and community members alike, ensuring ease of access to programming that spans wellness, culture and beyond.
Representation in leadership is a key proponent of E.D.I.T. Leadership at Eaton Workshop is over two-thirds women and two-thirds people of color. At Eaton DC, leadership is majority women and over 70% people of color. In Hong Kong, the Eaton team comprises 18 different nationalities. Six members of the team arrived in Hong Kong as refugees and the leadership team is made up of 52% women.
Staff Training is the same for all Eaton employees, year round. Heads of business and junior team members alike are diligently trained in meaningful areas such as gender inclusivity, thoughtful accurate use of pronouns, managing the local homeless community and so forth.
Principled on compassion, the initiative encompasses sweeping community engagement programmes that seek to uplift the human spirit, cultivate sense-of-belonging, as well as nurture creative expression, holistic wellness, and the collective pursuit of a better world for humans and the ecosystems we are a part of. Eaton is committed to a Triple Bottom Line, with people, planet and profits receiving equal attention. Qualitative metrics are tracked as diligently as quantitative metrics, and third-party certifications like LEED Gold Certification and Platinum recognition from Earth Check ensure that operating with purpose is a functional reality, not a marketing tool. With high priority given to authenticity and integrity, Eaton is at the forefront of a purpose driven economy, leading systemic changes in the hospitality industry.
