Are You Working Out Hard Enough? An Easy Trick to Find Out!

Think you need a fancy heart-rate monitor or other device to see if you’re working out hard enough? While those can be amazeballs, something as simple as the Perceived Level of Exertion Scale can tell you if you’re working out hard enough — or too hard. To help explain what the heck the Perceived Level of Exertion Scale is and how to use it, we have a special guest post from JoJo Gilbert-Ross for New Year New Rear Week! JoJo is an Atlanta-based Operation Boot Camp instructor who likes campers to leave “sweaty and smiling.” Check out her camp on Facebook or her weekly tips on the Operation… The post Are You Working Out Hard Enough? Doing Things Right Or Just Doing Them: Thoughts on Tabata

I got some really interesting feedback recently when I wrote about doing Tabata workouts. You smart readers and commenters made some great points, so I wanted to delve into them a little bit. My first entry into Tabata was doing a workout we posted over on Fit Bottomed Mamas, which consisted of four moves for four minutes each. It was 16 minutes of fast and furious exercise that got me sweating for sure. (I just typed “swearing” instead of sweating; Freudian slip.) True Tabata protocol consists of a warm-up, eight intervals of all-out high intensity exercise (20 seconds on, 10 seconds… The post Doing Things Right Or Just Doing Them: Thoughts on Tabata appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Do Interval Workouts Like a Boss With This Timer

We’ve always loved interval workouts, but lately, we’ve really, really loved them. From timed circuit-training to Tabata (oh, Tabata, the love/hate relationship we have with you!), there’s nothing better than an interval workout to get you feeling the burn in a short amount of time. But timing those intervals, especially the short ones? Well, that gets tricky. When you’re working your tail off, breathing hard, giving it your all and sweating up a storm, the last thing you want to do (or, perhaps, even mentally or physically can do — who’s experienced that?! I have!), is track numbers and times.… The post Do Interval Workouts Like a Boss With This Timer appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Get Your Sweat on With Sara Haley’s Sweat Unlimited Workout DVD

Why would I choose to do an at-home workout when I live a stone’s throw from a beautiful park with tons of bike/running trails, have two workout facilities and one yoga studio within walking distance, and could drive to another handful in a matter of 10 minutes? Well let’s see — there could be crappy weather, I might not have a vehicle, perhaps I’m in dire need of my own personal motivational coach, or maybe some days I want to dance like no one’s watching (and really have no one watching). It all boils down to choices, and that is… The post Get Your Sweat on With Sara Haley’s Sweat Unlimited Workout DVD appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Workout I Did: Tabata to Tunes

I recently shared my first Tabata workout and then some follow-up tips for Tabata first-timers. One of those tips was to use an app to help you out with your Tabata timing because you do not want to be worrying about counting or timing anything when you’re pushing yourself to your limit. Eight sets of something seems easy enough to keep track of, but when you’re sweating and panting and shaking from muscle fatigue, trust me, you’ll find yourself in a sort of workout amnesia by set five or six! After hearing about my first Tabata workout, TabataSongs.com sent me… The post Workout I Did: Tabata to Tunes appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

This Tabata workout by Dr. Michele Olson is a part of our fourth-annual Guest Bloggers’ Week. (Check out all of the inspiring, informative, entertaining and life-changing posts here!) Dr. Olson is known as THE Exercise Doctor and is a professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University Montgomery. Check out her website here. Tabata is hot! Really hot! And, for good reason. The research study I presented at the 60th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) showed that the metabolic rate was doubled for at least 30 minutes after a bout of “all out” Tabata doing body weight squat jumps. The amazing… The post Dr. Michele Olson’s Top 4 Tabata Workouts appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Last week I shared my first-ever Tabata workout, which left me super sore and wanting more. I want to share the Tabata love, so I encourage you to try a version of this high-intensity workout if you’re up for a challenge. You can tailor it to be as long or as short as you’d like! Here are a few Tabata workout tips for first-timers! Tabata Workout Tips for First-Timers 1. Know the formula. Tabata is 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest for a total of eight rounds per move. 2. Work to your level. If you’re starting out,… The post 6 Tabata Workout Tips for First-Timers appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Workouts With a Little Extra Kid-Challenge

I spiced up my workout routine recently with a little Tabata routine that we featured here. If you haven’t tried a Tabata workout, you should. It’s a super-quick way to get a workout that will leave you sweaty. And sore. (So sore it had me reminiscing.) But even though it had my arms aching, I loved its simplicity and the fact that there are endless combinations of Tabata workouts you could do — no equipment or gym required. As we mentioned in that post, a Tabata workout consists of 20 seconds of an exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest.… The post Workouts With a Little Extra Kid-Challenge appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Workout I Did: My First Tabata Workout

I’ve been seeing the word Tabata thrown around a lot lately. We covered it over on Fit Bottomed Mamas recently, and of course I couldn’t just write about it. I had to try it out, especially because I never had before. For those not familiar, Tabata is a high-intensity interval workout where you focus on one move for four minutes before moving onto the next. Twenty seconds of work followed by 10 of rest may seem easy on paper, but it truly is hard work and I was sweating by my second round of push-ups. How Jenn managed to do 40… The post Workout I Did: My First Tabata Workout appeared first on Fit Bottomed Girls.
