Coma Patients

They're unconcious. They cannot think or move, and some even require help breathing or keeping their heart beating or other tasks that we take for granted.

But where does the mind go? Or the conciousness...does it lose its connection with the brain and lay dormant in a vast pit of nothingness waiting for its return? Does the astral self (higher self, the "one mind") sense danger at the point right before being in a coma, enough of it that it is forced to leave the body in hopes of its survival and is thus lingering in the physical relm wondering around, searching for its body? Is it knocked into the atral plane where it lingers searching for a way to get back to its counter part?

What do you all think?
and why do you think it happens, scientific or other.

I heard some stories about coma patients hearing their loved ones read to them and other stories about coma patients with rem. I would hope that the mind would be able to break the bonds of the body.
