La emoción para mi era intensa y para todos los que estábamos en el stadium. La admiración que yo sentía por Tovar era mucha. Habia sido testigo, a travésde la prensa y televisión de sus actuaciones ,primero con los leones del Caracas en el Béisbol nacional y tambien en Las Grandes Ligas. ese día me dio un autógrafo y compartio de manera muy humilde y caballerosa con todos los que estábamos ahí. esa fue mi primer contacto con el Gran Cesar.

Pasaron los años, el sueño de ser pelotero profesional se termino en algún momento,la vida continua. A finales de los años 80, nos encontramos jugando Softbol con el equipo del “Hipódromo La Rinconada”,lugar donde se hacia mucho deporte y se jugaban las famosas “Caimaneras de los miércoles”, donde artistas,ex-peloteros,softbolistas,comerciantes y todo el que pudiera participar lo hacia con entusiasmo,alegría sin ningún otro fin que el de compartir socialmente y por diversión. En esos encuentros César Tovar asistía y era uno de los mas entusiastas. En esa oportunidad pude conocerlo mejor y compartimos bastantes momentos que me dieron la oportunidad de preguntarle muchas cosas sobre su carrera. Tovar era todo un Caballero.

Lo que mas me gustaba de César era su estilo de juego. debo decir que son contados con los dedos de una mano los peloteros con un estilo y espíritu tan aguerrido como el de Tovar. Pudiera ser Pete Rose, Nellie Fox, Orestes Miñoso y otros pero creanme que no hay muchos con el estilo de juego del Caraqueño. César jugaba para el equipo, nunca se daba por vencido sin importar el score, dispuesto a obtener un pelotazo para embasarse, defensa super segura, versatilidad,útilidad es la palabra que definio a este extraordinario pelotero Venezolano.

César Tovar nació un 3 de Julio de 1940, en Caracas. Su apellido viene por su madre, Justina Tovar. Su padre se llamaba Francisco Pérez y nunca se caso con su madre. de su padre vienen los genes de pelotero. “Frank” Perez jugo béisbol amateur con el “Chico” Carrasquel. César fue limpiabotas, de familia humilde,lo único que heredo de su padre fue su guante de béisbol y las ganas de jugar.Empezó a jugar como a los 8 años por El cementerio y El Valle. a los 15 estaba pulido como pelotero de tanta caimanera y jugar con peloteros de renombre en esa época. Algo que yo no sabia era su gran amistad con Gustavo Gil. Se conocieron por el año 1955 aproximadamente y siempre conservaron una tremenda relación. Gustavo ha sido uno de los grandes segundas base que ha dado nuestro béisbol, bueno, su apodo es el “Maestro”.

Siempre jugaron juntos Tovar y Gil ,jóvenes, atléticos,curtidos en la pelota de calle. Empezaron a ser vistos por los scouts de la época. Aclaremos que esos tiempos no eran como los de ahora. a los que firmaban los probaban muy bien y no firmaban a todo el mundo. Había que ser bueno de verdad.

El director de una filial de Cincinnati, Gabe Paul,viajo a Caracas a firmar a Gil y termino firmando a los dos por insistencia de Gustavo. eso fue una mañana del 1ero de enero de 1959. A Gil le dieron 2000 dolares y NADA a César Tovar. Sus inicios fueron lentos en las filiales de los Rojos.
