Having a Damn Good Time in Charlotte With Jordan Davis

Country Star Brings The Party To Skyla Credit Union Ampitheatre

In the summer of 2017, country pop singer Jordan Davis unleashed his debut single, “Singles You Up” onto the music world and has never looked back. Roughly nine months, later the song would end up hitting number one on the Billboard Country charts and a new country-pop star was born. Since then, Davis has been at the top of his game, releasing two studio albums and two EPs, and has worked with some of the biggest stars in country music including Luke Bryan. He is currently out on tour bringing his music to life to fans across the country on the Damn Good Time World Tour. Davis recently made a stop here in the Queen City bringing a party and a ‘Damn Good Time’ to Charlotte.

First up was rising star Ashley Cooke. In a sea of wanna-be country stars, Cooke is a true stand out and she hit the stage running, literally, in a cropped Hendrick Motorsports teeshirt that was sure to please Charlotte fans. Her vocals were outshined only by her bubbly personality and exuberant stage presence as she ran through a set heavy with tunes from her Shot In the Dark album.

She even gave us a medley of cover tunes with a little Tom Cochrane and even Stevie Wonder in the mix as she got down dancing with her guitarist and owning the catwalk like a queen. Could she be the next big thing in country music? Only time will tell, but after her performance, my bets are on Ashley.

After a short break, it was time for the one and only Mitchell Tenpenny. I have had the pleasure of seeing Mitchell live on more than a few occasions and I honestly can say that he never disappoints. His set is over the top fun and the energy is off the charts. Mitchell and his band were on fire as he stood by his microphone pointing and gesturing to the crowd. Not only did we get to hear crazy good songs, but we also got to hear some stories that somehow made the songs come to life even more.

The entire crowd had their middle fingers in the air, singing along to “Bitches” as Mitchell made his way down the catwalk to interact with the fans at the barricade. Of course, it wouldn’t really be a country show or a Mitchell Tenpenny set without paying a little homage to alcohol and we were more than happy to hear “Drunk Me” and “Alcohol You Later.” The most interesting song of the night came with the set closer as he did a wonderful rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” to end his portion of the show.

We were two sets into the show and it was already a night to remember, but we still have the main event yet to come. As the venue lights went down and videos played on the LED screen at the back, the anticipation across the venue rose to a fever pitch. The band took the darkened stage and before we knew it we were having a “Damn Good Time.” Jordan made his appearance at the rear of the stage atop a riser with a spotlight shining down on him before he made his way across the stage.

The party was definitely on as Davis walked the catwalk to the delight of the screaming fans up front who had been waiting all night for this moment to arrive. As the songs changed so did the LED graphics on the screen as we were transported to a bar for “Whiskey Weak” and a country church for “Church in a Chevy.” Davis sounded great as his vocals resonated across the hot, Charlotte night and his band sounded top-tier in every way.

About midway through the show, Jordan and his band came out to the center of the catwalk for an acoustic medley and a little storytelling. This is the point of the night where you can really tell if an artist is spot-on and boy was he. Davis tugged at our heartstrings with “Leaving New Orleans” and may have made us shed a tear as he spoke about his grandfather before diving into “Fishing Spot.” Pure joy radiated from Jordan on the stage and you could tell that he was in his happy place.

After that, it was time to crank up the heat with a medley of covers he dubbed the Summer of ‘07 mix. During this part of the show, he let the other band members take a turn at lead vocals as they ran through a little bit of everything with some Usher, Gavin DeGraw, and Maroon 5. Things really got cooking when he invited Ashley Cooke out on the stage to help him out on Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead.” Just when you thought the intensity couldn’t rise any further, Davis welcomed Mitchell Tenpenny back and Davis, Cooke, and Tenpenny wowed the audience with a little Blink-182 as everyone sang and jumped to “All The Small Things.”

I think we all needed a little rest after that one, but Davis kept things going with “What My World Spins Around.” Finally, I was able to take a few breaths as he slowed the pace a bit so we could all “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot” or ampitheatre, whichever the case may be. After closing out his set with “Take It From Me,” nobody was ready to go home yet and neither was Jordan Davis. He returned to the stage for a one-song encore leaving us to “Buy Dirt” as we headed home.

This was my first time seeing Jordan Davis perform live and I certainly hope it won’t be my last. What a fantastic show! The Damn Good Time tour continues on all summer so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch a show and have a “Damn Good Time” of your own. I know I sure did.
