Tour, Interrupted-Flogging Molly, minus The Interrupters, headlines Charlotte

March 12, 2020. That was the date of the last concert I attended before Covid disrupted live entertainment. Over two years later and the coronavirus is still having an impact. Flogging Molly and The Interrupters are currently co-headlining a tour, but due to a touring party member testing positive for Covid, The Interrupters will not be performing on at least four of the shows including the one I attended on June 10, 2022, at Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre in Charlotte, NC.  Disappointing, but at least we got an extended set from Flogging Molly as compensation.

First up were The Skints. Hailing from London, an interesting mix of reggae, ska, and dub with a little rock thrown in for good measure. Some mellow vibes which played well in an outdoor venue on a beautiful late spring evening. A good way to start off, and I’m likely not the only new fan they earned.

Still not to sunset when Tiger Army took over and the crowd was still trickling in. I’m only passingly familiar with rockabilly/psychobilly, but the trio had the look and sound. An upright bass seems an unwieldy instrument to maneuver around the stage but maneuvered it was and things were starting to become a little more rambunctious.

The Interrupters have a new album, In The Wild , dropping on August 5.

Flogging Molly is also promoting an upcoming album, Anthem , due September 9. However, on this night they led with one of their classics. I don’t recall if “Drunken Lullabies” was the first song of theirs I ever heard, but it’s the one that made an impression. New and old blended seamlessly into a very energetic whole. Energetic is a bit of an understatement. With only the occasional dip in tempo, I think breakneck would be more apt. Such a joy to watch a veteran group who clearly loves to perform. After my time in the photo pit was up, I retired to the lawn seats where dancing and Guinness were in abundance. Overall it was a party mood. If anyone was being a buzzkill, I didn’t notice.

I don’t know who actually reads concert reviews, but I’m going to assume if you’ve made it this far, you’re probably considering tickets to one of the upcoming dates. Either that or you’re a connoisseur of random train-of-thought ramblings. Being the charitable sort, I’ll go with the former and say emphatically that it is worth your time and money, likely even more so once The Interrupters have returned to the fold. 5/5 accordions.

Once an aspiring male model, Kevin quickly realized he had a face that was better suited to being behind the camera. When he's not at a concert, he can often be found at sci-fi conventions or preparing for the coming zombie apocalypse.
