Without thinking too much, start writing down how you feel. Do not worry about your grammar or spelling, what is important here is that you discharge your feelings onto the page. Once you have finished, you can rip up or burn the paper to destroy the negativity.

Go outside

Low mood is often a result of a disconnection with the world around you. If you spend all day sitting round the house or working in an office, you may begin to feel a little glum. By going outside and reconnecting with the world, you can help to improve your mood. A short walk around the block or to the local park can work wonders.

Eat a snack

Sometimes, a low mood can be a result of low blood sugar. If you begin to feel grouchy, you should have a small snack. Doing so will help to restore your blood sugar levels and improve your mood. However, be careful not to comfort eat if you are feeling low, as this can actually make you feel worse in the long run.

Call a friend

Sometimes, you just need to talk things through with someone you trust. If you are feeling anxious, you should give a close friend a call. Talking things through can help you to gain a new perspective on whatever is troubling you. It is also important to remember that human beings are social animals. If you do not maintain connections with those close to you, this will have a negative impact on your mood.

Meditate

Daily meditation will allow you to understand and control your own thought processes. During meditation, you enter into a relaxed state where you can watch your thoughts drift through your mind while you actively avoid dwelling on them. By learning to control your thoughts, you can deal with any negative ideas which are causing anxiety.

Stroke a pet

Research has shown that stroking the fur of pets such as cats and dogs can help to improve your mood. Petting cats and dogs can help to reduce your blood pressure while also encouraging the release of feel-good hormones in your brain. Being with an animal will force you into the "here and now" and can help you to forget whatever it is you are worried about.

Get creative

When you are experiencing low mood, you may feel powerless. One way of overcoming this feeling is by getting creative. If you play an instrument, you should pick it up. If you paint, then prepare your brushes, if you like to write, sit down at and start a poem or a story. It doesn't matter what tools you use or what the finished piece sounds, looks or reads like, what is important is the act of creation itself. Studies have shown that creative people enter into a state of "˜flow'. Flow occurs when you are fully engaged in an activity. When you are in a state of flow, you will not have a low mood as your brain will be focusing on the task at hand.

Do some exercise

If you are feeling frustrated or stressed, exercise is a great way to deal with these difficult emotions. By going for a run, lifting some weights or punching a punchbag, you can discharge negative feelings and use them to improve your fitness. Exercise will also release feel-good hormones, which will help to make you feel better.

Help others

If you are feeling down, sometimes the best way of improving your mood is to help others. If you see a homeless person on the street, give them some change or buy them a coffee. Volunteer with a local charity or soup kitchen to give something back to your community. Not only will doing these acts of kindness connect you with other people, but they will also help to lift your mood. Helping others can help you to see yourself in a more positive light.

Take some time out

Sometimes, you just need to take time out so you can look after yourself. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, don't be afraid of cancelling plans and having a little "˜you time'. Simply let others know that you will be out of the loop and then disconnect your phone and stay away from the internet. Use this time to relax and to recharge your batteries.
