Sanskrit is only spoken by less than 1% of the Indi an population. In schools it is only offered as an option as opposed to a mandatory class. Students are choosing more popular languages such as French, English and even German and Mandarin. Sanskrit and the Indian culture go hand in hand yet the politics of language and the sensitivity still remains.
Many still believe that Sanskrit is the language of the Hindus, and that it still has a heavy religious influence. Fact is that 95% of Sanskrit has nothing to do with religion at all.
