How to Build an Effective Team That Will Help You Succeed as an Entrepreneur

Sharing is caring!

To attain his business goals and objectives within a stipulated time frame, an entrepreneur must identify the right caliber of people in a view to assemble a truly productive team.

The need for effective teamwork cannot be overemphasized. It is critical for any business. In fact, the strength of your business could be seen in terms of your teamwork.

An entrepreneur, who aspires to be successful in the face of ever threatening competition, must scan the environment for three types of people.

Listed below are the three people you must have on your team

1. People who are ambitious and hungry for success

The secret to successful hiring is this: look for people who are ambitious and hungry for success like you.

Did you know a lion runs the fastest when he is hungry? Just as a hungry lion knows the full meaning of prey, that is how an individual who is hungry for success knows the full meaning of opportunity.

No matter the number of overalls opportunity is dressed in, he recognizes it, grabs it with both hands and never let go of it.

No matter how small your business is, as long as you have a compelling vision and know where you are going, many people can’t wait to join you in the task of building your business from anonymity to an enviable height.

The need to hunt for such people cannot be overrated because to be successful as an entrepreneur, you need people who can go out of their way to get the job done.

Here is the truth; 70% of businesses fail before the end of their second year of establishment and this had been attributed to the wrong team.

2. Seek out people who share the same passion or goals as you do

A Wiseman has rightly said, “When you are surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.”

The second types of people you must have in your team as a startup entrepreneur are individuals who share the same passion or goals as you do. Remember, those who chase the passion, not the pension.

Even if a person does not have the necessary skills so long as he or she shares your passion and understands the vision behind the business it is enough to recruit such an applicant.

It is important as an entrepreneur, to possess the relevant core skills required to excel in your chosen niche. If you are equipped with the appropriate skills, you can easily train anyone for the job.

Legendary technology entrepreneur and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, is in the habit of hiring unskilled men and women and training them for the job.

If Mr. Ellison notices that you understand the vision behind his business and have a passion for the job, he only asks you his favorite question which is, “Are you the smartest person you know?”

Your “yes” is all he needs to hire you and not your working experience. The reason is he knows when we are surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.

This was how the two-time university drop-out created one of the biggest business software companies in the world.

According to Apple boss Steve Job, “The most important thing for me as a startup founder is knowing that every person I work with is excited to show up to work every day, that each is doing what he or she loves."

The most amazing words I could ever hear one of my team members say [and I am humble to overhear it occasionally!], is, “This is the best job I have ever had.” And if it’s not, I would rather help he or she finds that job than help us do what we love at his or her own expense.”

On August 2018, Apple became the world’s first public company to be worth $1 trillion (£767bn). This rare feat is attributed to teamwork.

Yes, even after the death of its founder Steve Job, Apple continues to grow at a faster pace simply because the company knack for teamwork is not negotiable.

They have on their team only people who have a passion for the kind of job they do in Apple. This is because they know giving our best is easy if we find what we do pleasurable. Remember, we are self-motivated if we love our job.

Bringing to your team your friend or relative who does not understand the vision behind the business is a mistake you cannot afford.

If you must bring in such a friend or relative, at least not in the infancy stage of the business; and even at the Adolescent stage, make sure you place him or her in an insignificant position.

As a startup entrepreneur, before you assemble your team you must identify those who share the same passion or goals as you do. Someone who will say, “This is the best job I have ever had “the salary notwithstanding.

The fact is it is exceedingly improbable to fail in business when you have such people in your team.

3. People who have everything to lose if the business sink

According to America novelist James Baldwin, “The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose.”

The third caliber of people to hunt for and add to your team as a startup entrepreneur, are people you are sure will sink if the business sink.

For instance, an individual, who has a young family to cater for, will go to any length to get the job done.

Why? You may ask. Simply because he has everything to lose if anything happens to the business. The stronger your business is, the more he or she stands to lose.

The fact is if you include in your team a person who is trying to pay off his debt, by the time he finishes paying it, he is likely to put his interest first. This is not good for a well-established business let alone a startup one.

A person who needs capital to set up his or her business will leave your team as soon as he or she raises it. This can create a hole that may result in low productivity.

Build a team for the long term

To be successful as an entrepreneur, you need a long term team; because short term team could create so many holes in a business that may be hard to fill.

To build a long term team, find out the reason a person chooses to seek employment in your establishment. You know the decision to reach after your findings or don’t you?

Once you have succeeded in putting together your team, give each team member a role they are truly suited for. In other words, identify their area of specialty, and then just let them run with it.

Acting on these instructions will help you create an effective team, and give your business the best chance of success.
