Blogging for money

By Steven Aitchison

I have just started my blog and have written a few articles and pulled some from other sites. I started blogging after reading Steve Pavlina's blog and wanted to try and emulate his site to start off with.

professional_blogger My first thoughts were writing articles I enjoyed and putting them out there and hope eventually readers would come. However I wanted to get the money making side sorted out first so I didn't have to change all my posts in the future.

I started with adsense. I signed up with google got all the adverts and arranged them using the adsense deluxe plug-in, which is fantastic.

I then became a member of Amazon affiliate program as I had mentioned a few books in some of my articles and probably would do in the future.

Next it was Text Link Ads, signed up with them

Lastly I signed up with Chitika.

I thought that's it. I have the blog from wordpress, I have the plugins installed, I have all the sidebar widgets installed and got my money making side sorted out. All I had to do now was write my articles, my thoughts and post my links etc., wait a few months and I would be loving it! Loving it! Loving it!.

I am nearly two weeks into my blog and not one person has looked at it. I check my stats everyday and see some weird IPs from Hinet.net everyday, but aside from that there is hardly any traffic. I am very disappointed. However I am a patient person and I will keep writing and keep writing, now that I have the bug and wait for the links to come in and wait for the reader's comments.

One thing I have noticed about blogging is the amount of time it takes to keep the blog going. I work full time, I love my wife and children full time and hardly find time to write. So what I have done is replace TV time with blogging time. I get up early to blog, go to work, and spend another 3 hours blogging at night. My wife isn't too happy that I am at the computer all the time and my kids now look for me at the computer station before asking mum where I am. My computer is in the living room so I still feel connected with my family instead of being stuck in a room with no connection to them.

Blogging is frustrating, lonely, exciting, infuriating, and exhilarating which are all rolled into a little blogging emotion called "˜bloggerating'. Bloggerating is all the aforementioned emotions rolled into one as I can feel all of these from one minute to the next. It's frustrating setting a blog up, it's frustrating when a piece of code is not working, it's exhilarating finishing an article, it's exciting to see my name and thoughts on the web, it's lonely as there's no one there to help.

I have changed my design for the blog about 20 times so far but I like this one called Regulus. Its versatile and it's widgetised which is great. Only thing I don't like is the number of post brackets are on the next line. Apart from that it's great.

I know making money from blogging will be a long and arduous affair, but I love the writing so I am willing to stay the course. I just hope the visitors come and the pennies will follow.
