Brazilian Butt Lift

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

A Brazilian butt lift is performed with a natural fat transfer technique in which excess fat is gently harvested, purified, and transferred to add volume and lift to a smaller, flatter butt.

How does a Brazilian butt lift work?

A Brazilian buttock “lift” is a combination of liposuction and liposculpture in which fat is removed, then processed, and then reinjected into the buttocks. The incisions are very small, similar to the incisions created during liposuction. Fat harvesting with liposuction must be performed with a specialized, slower process to protect the integrity of the fat cells. The extracted fat cells are then injected into the buttocks in tiny droplets.

What are the risks of a BBL?

A Brazilian buttock lift has some health risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, pain, or asymmetry. Currently, this procedure is under evaluation by a safety task force of plastic surgeons, in an effort to increase safety. In some rare cases, intramuscular or submuscular injection of fat can lead to fat emboli, which can be dangerous and sometimes fatal. The safety advisory can be accessed here.

What type of anesthesia is used for our Brazilian Butt Lift?

When undergoing a Brazilian butt lift in our practice, you have two options for anesthesia in a BBL:

  • Local anesthesia:in this technique, a tumescent fluid is injected into the donor fat area. The formula contains lidocaine, which will numb the area. You can expect to experience some minor discomfort during the injection of the fluid and during the fat grafting procedure, but this technique is very successful, and we have performed hundreds of procedures with this method.
  • Local and general anesthesia:in this technique, an anesthesiologist or anesthetist will administer general anesthesia along with local anesthesia injected with the tumescent fluid. For higher volume liposuction and fat grafting, this technique may be appropriate.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The long term viability of the transferred fat cells is a direct result of the skills, processes, and experience of your surgeon. Some of the fat cells do not survive the transfer and are reabsorbed by the body, but cell survival rates can be as high as 70 to 80 percent when the process is performed with the most advanced techniques. You will need some patience to achieve the full, beautiful results of your BBL. Recovery requires about four weeks, with the final result achieved at about eight weeks. Most patients return to work in one to two weeks. You can expect some swelling for about six weeks. You must avoid sitting or a position that puts pressure on your buttocks and will sleep on your stomach during healing. A special pillow will allow you to sit without excessive pressure being placed on the treated area.

The body’s fat cells grow and shrink as you gain and lose weight – they do not increase in number. There is no benefit to gaining weight before undergoing a BBL. You will have increased fat volume, but not more fat cells. For the best results, it is best to be at a healthy weight. The transferred cells will grow and shrink in their new location, and there is no need for the cells to be larger when transferred.
