Deans' Holiday Gift Guide, a letter from new VP Amy Kwas '93, and more!
##SENDGRIDOPENTRACKING##

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I officially began my role as DePauw’s Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement on December 4, and I am elated to be back on campus in my old stomping grounds from the early 1990s. I have so many fond memories of my time as a student in computer science and women’s studies, working with The DePauw newspaper and student government, as well as all the enduring friendships that started in Greencastle and at Alphi Chi Omega. I know you have your fond memories and ongoing connections to DePauw, too, and I look forward to communicating with you about those and how you might be involved as we bring DePauw’s Bold and Gold vision alive to enrich the student experience for the present and future.

DePauw’s Bold and Gold 2027 Strategic Plan is well underway, and we are working to engage the necessary support to implement the four pillars:

Academic Renewal
Exemplary Student Experience
Institutional Equity
Flourishing University

Prospective students are enthusiastic about our new three-school model, including a new School of Business and Leadership and a new Creative School. The admission office is busily reviewing applications for admission and scholarships. They have already admitted almost 900 applicants, welcoming future Tigers who will ultimately make their enrollment decisions by May 1. Last year, more than 30% of admitted students were referred or introduced to DePauw by an alumnus. Please think about the young people you know and refer them to DePauw

As I get reacquainted with Old DePauw, I invite you to reach out if you have anything to share -- questions, concerns, or advice. I look forward to connecting with alumni and friends near and far, whether via our alumni social media channels or in person at A Bold and Gold Alumni Reunion Weekend on campus in June 2024.

May you have a wonderful holiday season and the happiest  of New Years.

Deans' Holiday Gift Guide

We asked DePauw's three school deans to recommend books and media they've enjoyed from alumni and faculty this year.

School of Business and Leadership Dean John Clarke recommends the following.

Mergers and Acquisitions Playbook:

Lessons from the Middle-Market Trenches

by Mark A. Filippell ‘75

Middle market companies are a critical sector of the U.S. economy and an important engine of job creation, collectively companies with between $10MM and $1B employ around 48 million people and represent one-third of private sector GDP. Overall merger and acquisition activity might have slowed since 2021 but remains strong in the middle markets as these deals continue to drive strategic transformation and growth. This book by Mark Filippell '75, pulls back the covers on sell side M&A and provides well structured advice from a seasoned practitioner. Mark provides

practical insights based on completing over 130 deals over 25 years working in investment banking. This easy to access book provides an understanding of the deal mechanics and how to maximize value and position an organization for success through the sale process. I recommend this to anyone interested in investment banking, private equity, strategy, negotiations, and entrepreneurship.

Leading Diversity for Competitive Advantage: The Twelve Strategic Competencies

by Peter Linkow ‘67

As a student of strategic management I am always looking for ways to understand how companies can establish sustainable competitive advantage. I have long valued diversity in organizations and experienced how diversity catalyzes innovation and creativity and leads to more effective decision making. This book by Peter Linkow '67, provides a structured and practical handbook on how to think about diversity and provides strategic models, tools, and templates to allow organizational leaders to leverage diversity as a driver of organizational performance. Peter is a frequent writer, speaker, and consultant on business strategy, change management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy. He will spend time this January working with DePauw students completing a winter course focused on leadership.

Dancing with the Tiger

by Lili Wright

Venturing into fiction, I had the pleasure of meeting Emeritus English Professor Lilli Wright at a charity event in Greencastle supporting the arts. I was fortunate to walk away with new connections, a basket of bourbon, and a new author to follow! Great writing and a compelling story await the reader.

College of Arts and Sciences Dean Bridget Gourley recommended books and music.

Demon Copperhead (2023 Pulitzer Prize for Literature)

by Barbara Kingsolver '77

Barbara Kingsolver, in her talented style, draws readers in as she uses the young hero of her story to bring to life the challenges of poverty and its impacts. This Pulitzer Prize for Literature story is one that should not be missed.

An Autoethnography of Letter Writing and Relationships Through Time: Finding our Perfect Moon

by Jen AdamsPerfect for the holiday season, Professor of Communication and Theatre Jen

Adams uses a reflective autoethnographic interlude to tell the story of finding a collection of love letters of a well-educated Jewish-American couple who lived their lives against the backdrop of the Jazz Age, Great Depression, and Prohibition.

Read My Plate: The Literature of Food

by Debby Geis

Who doesn’t think about the interplay of food and tradition during the holiday season? In this work, Professor Geis uses her talents for analyzing literature to consider the literal and figurative “plates” in the works of Allen Ginsberg, Jhumpa Lahiri, Suzan-Lori Parks and others to address how dynamics of race, ethnicity, gender, religion and social class affect what narrators and characters eat.

Beethoven Diabelli Variations, Op. 20[cd]: (Baton Rouge, LA: Centaur Records)

by May Phang

Professor Phang is known for her imaginative and compelling performances described as “vibrant”, “colorful” and evocative which she brings to her interpretation of the Diabelli Variations.

Creative School Dean Marcus Hayes recommended books and a film.

Love War Stories

by Dr. Ivelisse Rodriguez

This poignant, street-smart collection of short stories follows idealistic teenagers and weary mothers battling over what it means to be a woman in love.

Sightseer in This Killing City

by Eugene Gloria

In the wake of recent presidential elections in the United States and in the Philippines, Professor Gloria’s latest collection sharpens his obsession with arrivals and departures, gun violence, displacement, cultural legacy, and the bitter divisions in America.

Liberty’s Chain: Slavery, Abolition, and the Jay Family of New York

by Dr. David Gellman

In Liberty's Chain, Professor David N. Gellman shows how the Jay family, abolitionists and slaveholders alike, embodied the contradictions of the revolutionary age.

How to Blow Up A Pipeline

Directed by Daniel Goldhaber, written by Dr. Jordan Sjol (Faculty in Film and Media Arts) and Ariela Barer.

Set primarily in West Texas, the film follows a fictional group of eight young individuals who decide to blow up an oil pipeline at two key locations. This heist movie explores the moral validity of extreme actions in addressing the climate crisis, the question of terrorism, and the use of property damage and sabotage as activist tactics.

Philanthropy in Action

Emily Jones Knuth '99 leads, serves and gives for DePauw

Emily Jones Knuth '99 (pictured second from left with her family) recently took advantage of DePauw's Giving Tuesday campaign on November 28 to make a generous donation for the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. In addition to being an alumna, Knuth is also associate director of the Prindle Institute on DePauw's campus.

"‘Give now to better tomorrow’ is one of the reasons why my husband Dennis and I annually give to DePauw," she says. "As an alumna, my own DePauw experience, thanks to the faculty and staff who nurtured and helped me develop personally and

professionally along the way, was so impactful and has led me to seek mission-driven work and life. Now as a staff member, I want to provide a similar caring and inspiring environment for today’s DePauw students."

Emily adds, "Another reason we give is to honor my family’s close ties and involvement with the university since its beginning. My great, great, great, great grandfather, Rev. Benjamin Jones, was one of the Putnam County residents who gave $100 to help found Indiana Asbury College (DePauw University) in Greencastle in 1837. Since then, over 25 Jones-family relatives have attended DePauw. As my dad likes to say, “DePauw’s a big deal in our family!” I am here because my grandparents met at DePauw during the late ‘30s and early ‘40s."

Professor Kevin Kinney shared the following:

At DePauw, he flourished in his pursuit of scientific inquiry. He loved sharing his passion for neurobiology, taxidermy and marine life with students.
