Long Live One Tree Hill

I was in desperate need for my heartstrings to be pulled, tears to be shed, and laughs to be had. I turned to One Tree Hill and Lucas, Nathan, Peyton and Haley. 8 wonderful seasons of heartbreak and relationships, family drama and marriage, and life after graduation.

If you’ve never seen One Tree Hill, here’s a quick synopsis for you:

Lucas and Nathan have the same dad, but different moms.

Nathan and Peyton are dating.

Brooke doesn’t like to settle down.

Lucas and Haley are BFF’s.

(Fast forward)

Nathan and Haley get married.

Lucas and Peyton date.

Brooke has twins.

Well then, that escalated rather quickly. Want details? Go binge it for yourself. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte

I never thought in a million years that I would enjoy binge watching Sex and the City. To me, it was always this ridiculous show about 4 women living in idealistic Manhattan talking about sex 24/7.

I wasn’t wrong.

But it’s also so much more than that.

SATC.jpg

At first I was a little hesitant to begin watching it, but being sick in bed and fresh out of ideas for new shows to binge, SJP popped into my head. So I went on Amazon Video, and there it was, all 6 seasons. I started, and haven’t been able to stop since.

Although we like to reminisce about the 90’s, my generation doesn’t actually remember anything from then. And also considering today’s video quality, I thought that the fact that Sex and the City wasn’t in HD 1080p would bother me. On the contrary, actually. I enjoyed every minute of the old school look and feel of the production, the set, and even the fashion.

Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte are 4 best friends that live in the city, and also happen to be strong, independent, working, and successful (not so young) women. Each woman is trying to fulfill her respective definition of love. Each woman has her own personality and ideas on love, and somehow they each manage to give each other advice on achieving that happy ending.

The show has made me laugh, it’s made me cry, and it’s opened my eyes to what life was like when I was only 3 years old (I mostly appreciated that Carrie drank Starbucks and I got to see what the cups looked like in 1998).

I’m excited to finish the series, and as far as I can tell, it’s a show worth recommending.

Grey’s Anatomy, or as I like to call it, Bae’s Anatomy

Let’s get real. If you haven’t watched Greys Anatomy, are you really a binger?

Greys is one of those shows that has a GIF or meme for any scenario possible. From addressing every social issue to teaching life lessons, Greys Anatomy is the perfect medical drama to watch on those late nights when you’ve just had enough of studying.

Want to feel like a doctor for 48 minutes? Watch Greys Anatomy.

Want to feel like someone actually just gets you? Watch Greys Anatomy.

Want to stare at hot doctors save lives? You guessed it: Watch Greys Anatomy.

From Alex Karev to McSteamy to McDreamy, Greys has got all the eye candy a girl could ask for. And for the gentlemen out there, there’s always Meredith Grey for you.

Now for those of you who haven’t seen Greys (um why not?), it’s your run of the mill medical drama that deals with anything you could think doctors deal with. We’ve got our once in a lifetime surgeries, love triangles, rule-breaking, and so much more.

I mean honestly, how can this ideal couple not inspire you to binge and obsess over Greys Anatomy?

Dexter and his Life of Hero or Villain

Dexter was recommended to me by a friend and a professor, so obviously I had to start binging it.

dexter

For those who have ever heard of the show, Set in Miami, the series centers onDexter Morgan, a forensic technician specializing in blood spatter pattern analysis for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department, who leads a secret parallel life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down murderers who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.

I’m only two seasons in, so far I have these thoughts:

The first episode left me thinking “well ok, he’s sort of a vigilante”. Then I began to think “wow, this guy is a creepy criminal who gets rid of his guilt by justifying his actions by saying that he’s getting rid of the criminals that the justice system couldn’t handle”. Now I’m thinking “wow this guy loves to kill.”

Dexter has two kinds of fans: those who believe the good side of his actions, and those who love to see a character with two layers. With that I mean, he’s a hero by day and a villain by night.

The way Dexter is written as a character is actually really interesting. He wants to fulfill his craving to kill, but also wants to live a normal life with his Girlfriend, Rita, and her kids. This kind of conflict lives in all of us, but in different forms (obviously we don’t want to kill bad people as our night job). After getting past the first half of the second season, I was debating on stopping watching the show. So I stopped for a few days, and then realized I missed it. It made me question why I liked it, and I came up with a few reasons.

  1. I want to find out what happens. Does he get caught? Does he surrender himself? Does he stop killing?
  2. The relationship between him and Rita has got me wanting to see it through to the end.
  3. How can he love Rita’s kids, but kill people so cold heartedly at the same time?

All in all, I will continue the show, and after some deep thought, I do recommend this show to you. It’s different from other crime dramas I’ve come across, and it’s definitely worth the watch.

How To Get Away With Murder: Annalise Keating

How to Get Away With Murder is a wonderful series that showcases how strong and powerful a woman can be without a man. That may sound very feminist, but it’s just reality. At the start of the series, Annalise was portrayed as a self-sufficient, confident, hardworking woman. She is highly respected for being a great lawyer and law professor, whom her students both respect and fear. As the show progresses, we see there are two sides to Annalise: her public life, and her behind closed doors. Every person around her knew her as the strong woman she is portrayed as, but her prodigies learned her different side after they were all involved in a murder plot (spoiler alert!).

how-to-get-away-with-murderLike any normal human being, Annalise has problems going on in her personal life, as well as professional life. After a lot of contemplation, I came to the conclusion that my favorite part of this series is that the writers made Annalise real. Although the plot line isn’t very realistic, her character is. Since the beginning of TV time, women have been portrayed as this perfect doll on a pedestal that keep their emotions in check and bow down to their husbands. It’s refreshing to see that although Annalise was portrayed this way at first, her true colors broke through during the show.

Game of Thrones

I was a few years late hopping on this bandwagon, but in all honesty, I’m glad I was. I can’t imagine what kind of emotional roller coaster I would have gone through having to wait for the new episode every week.

Game of Thrones isn’t your ordinary kind of drama. If you asked me to explain it to you, I wouldn’t even know where to begin. But here’s what I can think of right now:

Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos and has several plot lines. The first story arc follows a dynastic conflict among competing claimants for succession to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. The show attracted record viewership on HBO, with a broad and active international fan base.

The show was recommended to me by multiple friends, and so I finally caved. I started, and I couldn’t stop. It even got in the way of my school work! It has everything from conflicting relationships to friendship v. family. Essentially, Game of Thrones is the ultimate bingeworthy show with substance. BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION. You can’t just watch it while doing something else. You actually have to sit down and look at the screen and pay attention to detail.
