MELDE'S EXPERIMENT Aim: To demonstrate the formation of stationary waves and verify that the number of loops in perpendicular position is twice the number of loops in the parallel position, if length of string and mass are kept constant. Apparatus: A tuning fork, a thin light string, a pulley, weight box, rubber hammer, meter scale and retort stand. Diagram: Parallel Position Perpendicular Position Observations: g = 980 CGS units Parallel Position: 1. Mass of the pan (m1) = 1 gm 2. Mass in the pan (m2) = ______ gm 3. Please note that this is only an indicative list of practicals. There may be changes in the practical exam. L 2 : SPRING MASS OSCILLATOR - I • Attach a weight hanger at the lower end of the spring suspended vertically from a rigid support. Add a mass (M0 = 200 gm) in the hanger. Take the position of the pointer(x0) as zero. • Repeat for three more masses which are less than M0 and three more masses which are less than M0. Note the position of the pointer for six (6) values of M. Find the extension (x) in each case. • Plot a graph of Mg against x. THIS IS A SUGGESTED LIST OF ACTIVITIES. STUDENTS SHOULD NOTE THAT THERE MAY BE VARIATIONS IN THE ACTUAL PRACTICAL SLIP. EFFECT OF DETERGENT ON SURFACE TENSION 1. Measure the rise of water in a capillary tube, using travelling microscope. 2. Measure the rise of detergent solution in the same capillary tube. 3. Compare the heights in both cases. 4. State your conclusion from the results. Given: Least Count of travelling microscope = 0.001 cm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USE OF MULTIMETER You are given a set of electronic components.
