Welcome to Modern Homesteading Homesteading – 21st Century Style

Welcome to our little corner of the web.  It’s been a long journey to get here, but after eight years or more of preparation and two years of ‘modern homesteading’, I finally got to the point where I could start to share with you what I’ve learned and continue to learn, and I’m thrilled to be able to connect with others who either are thinking of moving to a rural area, have recently moved into their new piece of paradise or just think it might be an interesting thing to ponder.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit – I don’t have all the answers.   Far from it.   My goal is to build a community of like-minded people who want to share their rural living and homesteading experience and know-how with others just starting out.  I’ve learned so much from my mentors, and am honoured to have the opportunity to bring it all together, with my own little twist.  Huge thanks go out to the late Robin Wheeler and all of her Sustainable Living Arts Schoolexperts – it’s from them that I first gained the confidence to try some of the ideas and projects we’ll be highlighting here. Also on the ‘I couldn’t have done it without’ list is Sandi Krakowski . Without her brilliant (and sometimes ‘tough love’) motivation and knowledge, I’d still be sitting on the sidelines with an idea and a dream.  But now I’m off the sidelines and finally on the field!  Huge thanks to them both – they’ve made this possible, and honestly, have changed my life.

Now, all that said, this site isn’t about me – it’s about YOU!!  If the content we’ll be sharing moves you in any direction at all, please comment on the posts, and feel free to share resources and your opinions – this is what will make this a real community of modern homesteading pioneers.

It takes a lot of courage to pack up and move to away from the comforts of city life, and knowing others are having the same challenges (and successes) might just help get you through the inevitable day that you find yourself snowed in, the chickens have been attacked by a rogue mountain lion (or more likely, a raccoon) and the power goes out because the hydro company failed to trim the overhanging trees down the road and you have an important client meeting scheduled.  On days like this, you’ll feel like packing it in, but hopefully we can build this thing to the point where you can connect here or to our Facebook page for advice or just an ear to listen.

No matter how spread out we are, we all need to know that we’re not in this alone (even though some days it definitely feels that way!).
