I know what you’re thinking… “you live in Houston, how do you know what a snowball looks like?”….. Here’s the truth, when you live in a place that is warm 11 and a half months out of the year, you go a little crazy with all things snow, even if it’s fake. This is a fun and easy DIY Christmas ornament that will bring some texture to your tree while still letting some of the sparkly lights shine through. 

Plus it doesn’t require many supplies so you can make a lot of them and still have plenty of room in your budget to splurge on candy canes and buffalo check ribbon. 

Or you can just go crazy getting supplies to make more snow themed ornaments such as:

What do you need to make these DIY Snowball Christmas Ornaments? 

• Glass Christmas ornaments
• Mod Podge
• Paint Brush
• Fake plastic snow
• Iridescent glitter

That’s all you need! 

I used matte Mod Podge because that is what I grabbed off the shelf first. I’m very detailed and technical like that. You can use any Mod Podge you want, including the glitter Mod Podge. 

The glitter is also optional if you want a matte look for your tree. I didn’t have a choice because I accidentally spilled the glitter into the fake snow.  But I’m kinda glad I did because I really like how it looks. 

A word about the fake snow:

There’s a lot of fake snow out there. Some you add water to and it expands, some is made of styrofoam like the one that I used in this Snowman ornament , but for this project you want silvers of plastic such as this fake snow from Amazon.

Once you have all of your supplies gathered, you’re ready to make your ornament. 

To start, paint your ornament with Mod Podge. I painted the bottom using the silver topper to hold onto and then removed the silver topper and stuck my pinkie finger inside the ornament to hold onto it. 

There’s no method to perfectly applying the Mod Podge. Just slap it on. 

Technical. That’s how I roll.

Once your ornament is covered in Mod Podge, you simply roll it in the fake snow. I rolled some and then also poured some over the top of it. Really you just want to get the whole thing covered in the fake snow. 

After my ornament was done I forgot that I didn’t have a place set up for it to dry. So naturally I just dumped it back into the fake snow container and let it dry that way. It turned out to be the perfect solution. 

I would recommend doing the same thing or a similar process such as using little bowls with a small amount of fake snow in the bottom. 

Let the ornament dry for a few hours and then replace the silver topper. 

I love how these turned out because part of it looks frosty and lets the light shine through while other areas have a heavier texture. They’re gorgeous on the tree or would look great strung across your entryway to welcome guests.
