DIY Gift Bags – Just Add Glitter!

One of the worst things is when you’re given a really cute gift bag with a present and it gets torn or crumpled and you can’t use it again. Have you ever thought about making your own DIY gift bags? Using canvas totes and some glitter, you can make really cute gift bags such as this candy cane striped one.

The great thing about making your own DIY gift bags is that they’re fun and economical. You can use them over and over again or let them be part of the gift.

A while back I shared with you how to make this DIY Christmas Gift Bag – Spoiler Alert, It’s Coal . If you love that bag, you can grab the free cut file on the post.

I love the Spoiler Alert bag because I love humor but I also love shiny things. So that’s why I knew the second bag needed glitter.

Glitter striped gift bags are easy to make and fun.

The great thing about canvas bags is that there are so many different colors and sizes. I found this package of three canvas bags at Hobby Lobby for $6 before using the 40% off coupon. You can find a ton of options on Amazon as well.

Once I had my gift bag ready, I laid it out on a large piece of freezer paper ( because it’s my secret crafting weapon ) and then used blue painter’s tape to make diagonal lines on the bag.

I actually taped the bag down onto the freezer paper. It’s easier than trying to get perfect edges or worry about it moving around as you work.

Once the bag had diagonal lines in blue painter’s tape, I used my favorite fabric paint to paint the white uncovered spaces.

While the paint is still wet, quickly go over it with a thin layer of Mod Podge. Or you can be the ultimate rebel and mix the paint and Mod Podge together before painting it onto the bag. It won’t hurt.

Now you’re ready to sparkle and shine. Take glitter and sprinkle it over the wet paint / Mod Podge mixture.

Once you have the whole bag covered with glitter, you might want to gently push the glitter down into the Mod Podge. One quick push with your hand or dab with a sheet of wax paper should do the trick.

Let it dry for about 5-10 minutes and then remove the tape and lay flat to finish drying.

I let it dry overnight.

Once you feel it’s totally dry, pick it up and give it a little shake to dislodge any lose glitter.  If you have any spots without glitter, paint a little Mod Podge onto that area and reapply the glitter.

After you shake off the excess glitter, you’re ready to go!

That’s how simple and fun these DIY gift bags are to make!

Don’t they look cute together?

This makes my heart so happy because if you follow me on Instagram then you know that wrapping gifts with wrapping paper is my kryptonite.  I just can’t do it and I don’t have the patience for it.

Once more, here’s your chance to grab the free Spoiler Alert: It’s Coal cut file .

Save this idea to Pinterest to use for later or share it with friends.
