Rebounding Drill: Taps

Rebounding is an important skill whether you are playing defense or offense. The more rebounds you obtain, the more possibilities you have to score points. One drill that can be done as a team or as an individual to improve jumping and rebounding skills is taps.

Taps is the perfect drill to work on rebounding skills. It can also be a fun drill to develop a good team dynamic. As a whole, the team wants to succeed. Once a rhythm is developed and a team is succeeding with this drill, the more the team will want to work together to keep it going.

To start, the coach tosses the basketball against the backboard as the team is lined up in a single-file line in front of it. Once the ball is tossed up, the first person in line must jump up to grab the ball in the air and tap it against the backboard before landing back on the ground.

As you can see from the video, the key is to tap the ball just right so that you can catch it at the right point in the air to put the ball back up. Finding the right touch is important so the person behind you can successfully do the same. Panicking and rushing during this drill will only mess it up. Catching and tapping must all be done while in the air.

Also as shown in the video, it is very easy to do this drill alone. You can even try it one handed was you get the hang of it so that you can develop some ball handling skills for each hand, or rebounding with each hand.

This drill takes time and practice as a team or and individual, but is worth the skill.
