New Two-Door Ford Bronco Looks to Challenge the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

2021 ford bronco (1)

Ford is looking to challenge the off-road superiority of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Fueling this rumor are the new spy photos of the two-door Ford Bronco on the dirt.

Ford already released a teaser video of the new Ford Bronco. It shows the auto traversing the desert, and together with it is a statement that the vehicle will make its world premiere in the spring of 2020.

Previously, we have seen a four-door model of the Bronco. Then recently, Road and Track released a new set of photos of its two-door version equipped with all-terrain tires. These shut down any doubts that its maker is taking a jab at the Wrangler, which comes in four-door and two-door configurations.

Although it is questionable as to whether or not the Bronco has what it takes to dethrone the Wrangler, it will certainly get a chunk of the slice that its competitor is currently enjoying in the off-road compact SUV segment of the market.

The two-door Bronco is heavily-clad in camouflage but its stance suggests that it will likely get the same platform used by the Ford Ranger pickup. Meanwhile, its front grille will possibly adopt the styling of the Bronco R Baja racer.

The two-door Bronco seems to be hiding a removable top similar to the Wrangler as well. With that, it might also feature removable doors.

Though Ford is tight-lipped about the powertrain of the upcoming Bronco, it is expected to offer the same mechanical specs as the Ranger due to their similar platforms.

4 Things You Should Know About The New Ford Bronco

Everyone’s excited about the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco. It took Ford nearly a quarter of a century to come up with a new-generation Bronco and we are eagerly awaiting what’s in store for us. So far, we’ve heard rumors and saw a teaser picture.

The Bronco has always been a cool vehicle though it took OJ Simpson to bring it to a whole new level of iconic. Now that the all-new Bronco is about to arrive, we are sure of two things only: this will be a staple of American off-roading culture and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will finally have a competition.

1. It will use the same architecture of the Ranger.

Ford will use a short wheelbase version of the T6 platform. This will allow them to create and develop a vehicle that will be perfect in any market. The T6 architecture can be found in the Ranger, the Everest, and the Troller. It is a body-on-frame type of architecture that can support a number of different body styles with the same wheelbase underneath. The chassis of the T6 is also the perfect size for the new Bronco, which in size, will fall somewhere between the Explorer and the Expedition.

2. It might have a three-door off-roader version.

There were many rumors in the past that the new Bronco is going to be like other conventional SUVs—a five-door vehicle with a spare tire that clings on the back door. But one of the recently released teaser photos hinted that it will be a three-door off-roader. The nod to the classic is not lost on us and we’re a sucker for the traditional.

3. It will be available in 2020.

That’s two more years of waiting before we can get our hands on the new Bronco. The 2019 Detroit Auto Show should be where the Bronco will be unveiled so watch out for that next year. The 2020 Bronco will have an estimated starting price of $35,000 while the top-of-the-line variants will be in the near $50,000.

4. It will be made in the USA.

Ford is very proud of the fact that the Bronco will be 100-percent USA. It will be assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant next to the new Ford Ranger. Ford has already readied the facility, pouring in a staggering $850 million to retool the plant for the production of the new vehicle.

3 Things That Explain The Hype Behind The Ford Baby Bronco

In March 2018, Ford revealed its two-year plan to release new models, a majority of which would be SUV crossovers. One of the biggest news is the hybrid version of the F-150 and the revival of the iconic Bronco. But that’s not all because we are hearing reports that there would be a smaller sibling to the Bronco II or the “Baby Bronco.”

Exterior

The rendering of the Baby Bronco showed that it will compete with the Jeep, particularly the Renegade. The first thing that will catch your eye is the boxy shape—from the front fascia down to the rear fascia (though that one isn’t clear yet). There’s a wide grille that runs between the headlamps and the big “Ford” lettering could clearly be seen.

Speaking of headlamps, the units are round and simple but features LED technology. The bumper looks very basic with a simple grille and possibly LED foglamps on each side. Thick cladding can also be seen on the fenders. Other features would be its tall ride height and the rack on the roof.

Interior

It’s difficult to say how the Baby Bronco will look in the inside since Ford plans to reveal it in 2021. That’s a lot of time for the company to introduce a new design language. That being said, the Baby Bronco should be able to give the Renegade a run for its money.

There should be ample seating for five adults. The Renegade has good legroom and headroom rating for the rear-seat passengers at 40.5 inches and 35.1 inches, respectively, so Ford should try to top that off. The company should also match the 45.3 cubic feet trunk of the Renegade.

Drivetrain

The Baby Bronco might have the same engine options as the Escape as it is slated just above the EcoSport. In the US, the Escape is being offered in three four-cylinder gasoline engines that can produce somewhere between 168 horsepower (for the base model) and 245 horsepower (for the top-of-the-line model).

Are We Looking At The Upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco?

Ford earlier said that the Ford Bronco would arrive in 2020 and the new Ranger a year before that. And though we’re all excited on what could possibly be in store for us in the next two years, no details have been released and we’re left to imagine how the Bronco would look like.

You can’t really blame car enthusiasts because this is the first time Ford is diving into the new midsize trucks competition. The Bronco will give the Chevrolet Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Jeep Wrangler a run for their money… and yet, that’s not until 2020.

We kept on thinking how the new Bronco would like. Would it be similar to the concept Ford showed off in 2004 or how about the Brazilian-market Ford Troller, which has a boxy and utilitarian off-road look? Then again, there’s the Ranger-based Everest, a family-friendly SUV.

The spy photos shown here look like a warmed-over, right-handed Everest, which is why a lot of Bronco enthusiasts are scared that it is what exactly we might be getting in 2020. Raj Nair, Ford’s chief technical officer, was quick to clarify these reports. Back in January, he told Autoline that Ford does not plan to make the Bronco similar to the Everest.

The new Bronco will be completely “unique” from the Everest, he said. The front end was covered in checkered camouflage, so we’re thinking Ford doesn’t want us to see something new on the front. But since most of the SUV is undisguised, we’re sure the production model would look very different.

For now, as mentioned by an “inside source” a few months ago, we can assume that the new Bronco would look similar to Brazil’s Troller, albeit the former will be a four-door version. Although we would love to see a two-door Bronco, there’s not much market for a two-door midsize SUV, so we’ll be contented with a four-door version if that’s what it takes.
