Bentley’s SUV receives the Final Nod!
After being two ways about the new Bentley SUV that the company had revealed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show for a long time, the Volkswagen Group has finally given green light for the production of the vehicle. Rumors about this news had been spread a few months ago when an anonymous employee of Bentley Motors revealed that the company had assured employees with jobs for the production of the new SUV. The employee also said that the company has been preparing vigorously for the production. However, these rumors have now been confirmed as the company itself declared the news to the SUV World.
Although unnamed till now, the new Bentley SUV will be based on the EXP 9 that the company had revealed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The company said that the SUV will go many minor changes before it goes under production. Bentley made clear that the SUV will look similar to the EXP 9 Concept, but not the same. The concept model had received mixed reviews, but Bentley hopes of gaining appreciation after the vehicle has been produced. Whatever it is, the SUV is going to be mind-blowing! We are talking about a Bentley after all!
Experts anticipate that the SUV will be out in the markets for consumers within a time frame of 3 years. The manufacturing plant in Slovakia which is owned by the Volkswagen Group will be used possibly for the production of the SUV. Just like its sibling, the amazing Bentley Continental GT, this SUV is expected to come in models boasting of V8 and W12 engines. The new SUV will surely be very fast and powerful, and expensive as well. Yes, that’s right. The new SUV is bound to be expensive, it’s a Bentley we’re talking about after all! Again!
An interesting thing to note here is that Volkswagen still hasn’t given a nod to another of its subsidiary, Lamborghini’s new SUV concept, Urus. The group has to make some vital decisions before discarding or approving the Urus. However, even though the Urus is not up for production yet, Lamborghini didn’t refrain from protesting when the patented design of the model was stolen and heavily similar designs were submitted in China. This might point towards a green light for the production of the Urus!
If not Urus, then Volkswagen has at least given the Bentley SUV the final nod. We expect of seeing another magnificent beast like Bentley running down the streets soon! The new Bentley SUV would face fierce competition from other luxury SUVs which include names like Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg, etc. Following Bentley’s footsteps, Rolls Royce has also planned of launching its own SUV. The new Bentley will hence, see immense competition from here as well. If Volkswagen shows green light to the production of the Urus, then the SUV market will feature three of the most elegant SUVs – The new Bentley SUV, the Rolls Royce SUV and the Lamborghini Urus. There is nothing to fret about from now! There are a solid 3 to 4 years before these veihcles come out in the market!

New Acrua NSX Concept Car
Several years have passed since the original Acura NSX was taken out of production and the US and Hong Kong market where it was sold. Nissan Takes On the Future
Fuel cell development is generating a lot of buzz in the automobile market. This technology involves generation of electricity by hydrogen and oxygen, with water as the only emission. Fuel cell technology could be a major breakthrough in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles.
Nissan has collaborated with automobile giants like Ford and Daimler for the development of fuel cell technology. The three bigwigs of the automobile world have joined hands to come up with a technology that is both affordable and reliable by 2017.
All the three companies with put in equal amounts of money; however the exact amount has not been disclosed. Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn hinted during a press conference that the investment by each company will be around $735.8 million. He only mentioned that the automakers will hire engineers from all over the world to work on the development of this technology.
The news of this collaboration comes shortly after Nissan’s announcement of a restructure in its policies and technology. The project is titled Nissan Revival and this union seems to be a big step in the company’s new policy.
Daimler’s executive, Thomas Weber, revealed during a press conference in Nabern, Germany that the carmakers are hoping to develop over 100,000 vehicles powered by fuel cell technology. Weber said, “This technology has the biggest potential for emission- free driving” compared with other alternative powertrain. This cooperation gives us the opportunity to bind together the know-how of three experienced partners” to enable commercial production of cars running on the powering system”.
The fuel cell technology would be step ahead of the hybrid technologies that are used by Nissan and Daimler. Nissan’s Leaf and Daimler’s Smart are the EVs that are currently the most eco-friendly vehicles in the market. But now it seems like they are taking it a step further and removing pollution completely from the environment.
In today’s automobile market, tie-ups are becoming extremely popular. This reduces development costs for each company and speeds up the development process considerably. This reduces investment and increases sales to a large extent. Thus, it is a win-win scenario for everyone.
Ford Motors is based in the US, Daimler takes up in Germany and Nissan has its base in Japan. Thus, this new collaboration unifies most of the world. Development work will take place in all these locations, thus making this a global tie-up with an international impact.
Mitsuhiko Yamashita, a Nissan executive, stated “Fuel cell electric vehicles are the obvious next step to complement today’s battery electric vehicles as our industry embraces more sustainable transportation.”
Daimler executive, Thomas Weber, said “We are convinced that fuel cell vehicles will play a central role for zero-emission mobility in the future.”
Ford executive, Raj Nair, said, “Working together will significantly help speed this technology to market at a more affordable cost to our customers. We will all benefit from this relationship as the resulting solution will be better than any one company working alone.”
All three executives are geared up for the collaboration, only 2017 will tell what results it yields.
Nissan On Sale: Leaf Prices Drop by $6,400
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Nissan Leaf. Sales did not look good in 2012 and this did not bode well for the future of EVs in America.
However, it looks like Nissan has taken a brazen step in order to boost sales and increase Leaf popularity. During the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Nissan executives announced a $6,400 price drop for its 2013 base vehicle.
Nissan Leaf, often criticised for its ostentatiously high price has humbled down and now costs merely $28,800. If you exclude tax rebates in some states and $7,500 cut in federal taxes, you can get your hands on Nissan Leaf for $18,800 only.
The 2013 Nissan Leaf will be available in three trim levels- Leaf S will cost you $28,800, Leaf SV is available for $31,280 and the highest model Leaf SL comes with a price tag of $34,840. The most exciting thing about this price cut is that the price of the most expensive 2013 Leaf is lesser than the cheapest 2012 Leaf. It is clear that Nissan has done all it could in the price department to make Leaf more appealing to prospective buyers.
Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, said during the interview at the North American International Auto Show, “the new prices make the Leaf the least expensive five-seater electric for sale in the US”. The Global Vice President of Leaf sale, Billy Hayes, stated that “From the very outset, Nissan has continuously advanced and refined the affordable zero emissions vehicle ownership experience. Now customers won’t have to pay a premium for owning a green car that’s really fun to drive, and that’s exciting.”
This price slash is essentially due to the geographical shift in Leaf productions. The 2013 models will not be manufactured at the Japanese Nissan plant. Leaf production has begun in Smyrna, Tennessee. The United Stated Department of Energy granted a rebate of $1.4 billion to Nissan, allowing them to produce 150,000 Leaf models and 200,000 batteries at its Smyrna plant. So, as both the car and its batteries will be produced in the US, Nissan will save a lot in production cost. This explains the huge dip in Leaf prices.
Another reason for the Leaf’s desirable and inexpensive price tag is its market performance in 2012. Nissan had estimated a sale of over 200,000 Leafs but it could only sell 9,819 in 2012. This number was nowhere close their goal and only 1.5% higher than the number of cars sold in 2011. Nissan was in desperate need of a miracle, and it looks like this new price tag might do the trick.
The new Leaf will come with 107 horsepower, 187lb of torque and a 48-module lithium ion battery. Nissan executives reveal that due to its improved aerodynamics, the 2013 Leaf will have a longer driving range than its 2012 version. The numbers aren’t out yet but it all looks good on paper. Hopefully, this will give the Leaf the much needed popularity boost.
Mercedes-Benz Will Bring All-New SUV to Alabama Plant
Luxury auto brand Mercedes-Benzhas big plans for the next decade. Recently, at a Daimler Group Annual Press Conference in Stuttgart, the company’s CEO Dieter Zetsche laid out the brand’s aggressive plan to introduce 13 new models over the next eight years. All of these vehicles will be completely new to the brand, with no true predecessor model. Some of these vehicles include a reworked Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, a four-door Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class coupe, a revamped flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, and a completely new Mercedes-Benz SUV, which will be added to the company’s production line in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
According to reports from Dieter Zetsche, the new SUV will most likely be added in 2015 as the fifth of the thirteen new models, and it will be the only new model to be produced in the U.S. Earlier reports stated that a mystery vehicle would be added to the Tuscaloosa County production lines, and now we know what kind of vehicle it will be!
Zetsche explains, “At our plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, we are currently preparing for the production of another new SUV: an especially dynamic all-terrain vehicle. You will hear more about that soon.” The Mercedes-Benz exec. does not elaborate further. A prototype of the new SUV (which is still without an official name) was recently shown to the state’s governor, Robert Bently and several local officials during a visit to Stuttgart.
Currently, the Tuscaloosa County plant produces Mercedes-Benz M-Class and GL-Class SUVs and Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossover vehicles. A new generation of the popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan will also be added to the Vance plant later this year, with the first new model likely appearing in early 2014.
Over the next two years, Mercedes-Benz will invest over 21 billion euro in research and development for its equipment and plants to battle BMW and VW for the number one automaker spot. (The company is currently in third place). Zetsche also recently noted that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class Series will make its world debut in the middle of this year. The Mercedes-Benz S-Classis arguably the brand’s most important vehicle.
In a response to the fact that the S-Class is regarded as a symbol of luxury and the symbol of the impressive nature of German engineering, Zetsche also notes, “[Mercedes-Benz] will live up to this reputation once again with this new model: in terms of fuel consumption and safety as well as comfort and design. Plus, there will be unprecedented choice in models at the top end of our portfolio. In the coming years, we will launch five versions of the new S-Class.” The five model variants of the new S-Class are expected to include the standard and long-wheelbase models, a convertible, a coupe, and a flagship limousine.

A Happy New Year for Audi India – It Sold 737 Vehicles in January 2013!
2013 has begun on a brilliant note for Audi India. It is reported to have sold a whopping total of 737 cars all over India in just the 30 days of January itself. This German luxury car manufacturer, which officially entered the Indian market in March 2007, has been steadily expanding its consumer base, thus garnering the second position in terms of sales figures amongst international luxury car brands.
The sale of 737 cars in January 2013, which establishes a 10.5 % growth from last year (when the January sales were 667), is reflective of the expansionist agenda which aims at replacing BMW as the highest sold luxury brand in India. In fact, in January itself, Audi India launched two new international models into the Indian market – Audi R8 and Q5. Moreover, it has launched two new showrooms Audi Mumbai South and Audi Lucknow to further enhance its presence in India. As is evident, Audi India is leaving no stone unturned for reaching the top and it appears that their attempts are succeeding.
As observed by Mr. Michael Perschke, Head of Audi India, “We (Audi India) are constantly enhancing our product line, network growth and creating wider brand awareness; this is creating a larger customer base and is reflecting clearly in our sales. Our growth strategy is finding resonance with discerning luxury customers in India.” These observations are corroborated not only by the soaring sales by also the awards and recognition Audi has been garnering; Audi won eight prestigious awards of the Indian automobile industry in 2012-13.
As of now, Audi has 12 of its vehicles being sold in India; Audi A4, A6, A7 Sportback and A8L, Q3, Q5 and Q7, S4, RS5 Coupe and TT Coupe, R8 Coupe and R8 Spyder. The price range of these vehicles extends from roughly Rs. 27 lacks to over Rs. 1.4 Crores. Currently Audi has a total of 25 dealerships all over India that sell their cars, either exclusively or otherwise. However, by the end of 2013, Audi hopes to have extended its network to 34 dealerships, which shall help in the realization of their annual target; selling 10,800 cars in India by December 31, 2013. Interestingly, their target reflects a 20% increase from the past year’s sales; if Audi India does meet its target, it will have crossed an important milestone of the automobile industry.
2013 seems to have ushered in a new spirit of aggressive marketing and expansion for Audi India. Everything, from its sales figures and market presence to its annual target and executive attitude, is an indicator of the fact that this is going to be a big year for this enterprise. And that, says Mr. Perschke, is exactly the objective and outcome so far, “…based on our current performance we are well on track to achieve the No. 1 position in the luxury car market in India by 2015”.
