Fourth-Generation Honda Fit To Get New Design
Known as a Jazz in some markets, particularly in Asia, the 2020 Honda Fit is about to be redesigned and restyled. Since its unveiling back in the late 2000s, this subcompact hatchback has been the Japanese brand’s best-selling compact sedan.
New spy shots of the prototype have been spotted while the vehicle was being driven around in Germany. The hatchback was heavily camouflaged but the spy images give a sneak peek of what the hatchback will bring to the table. The 2020 model will have a rounder and more streamlined shape for the new subcompact hatch.
The prototype also gave a glimpse of the Fit’s new interior design, which looks to be ready to sport a large infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard.
The new Fit will be based on the all-new platform that can house both an internal combustion (petrol and diesel engines) and a hybrid or fully electric powertrain. This supports the argument that Honda is planning a hybrid powertrain as the sole option for the new Honda Fit.
The latest Insight is a good indication of what engines (or combination of engines) will be used for the Fit. The Insight houses a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle inline-4 that’s paired with two electric motors that replace the transmission. The Insight generates 151 horsepower but this may be lowered for the Fit since the current model just makes 128 horsepower from the 1.5-liter inline-4 engine.
There’s also a possibility that the Honda Fit may add an electric powertrain in the new model. This works best for the international markets that will miss out on the Japanese brand’s upcoming electric car based on the 2017’s Urban EV concept. The United States will miss out on that concept. It will also give Honda the opportunity to price the Fit more aggressively.
The engines will most likely be the 1.2-liter Petrol engine and a 1.5-liter diesel engine, though the engine will be reworked to meet the BSVI emission norms.
Next-Gen Honda Fit Spotted
We are not going to see the next generation of the popular subcompact Honda Fit or Jazz in other countries until at least 2020, but it’s nice to know that the Japanese automaker is testing a prototype on public roads.
The next-generation Fit, which will replace the current-generation subcompact launched in 2015, was spotted wearing heavy camouflage in a series of spy shots . That did not stop us, of course, from getting hints of what’s to come and these are a completely redesigned Fit with a very different shape from the current model.
Instead of the sharp nose, the next-gen Fit might have a flatter-looking front with the headlights and taillights taking on a more horizontal-looking appearance. This is important to note because taking on a horizontal orientation will give the Fit a more mature look than previous and the current model.
These little details might change as the model moves closer to the production date but what is interesting to note is the changes on the rear end. It appears, at least for now, that the rear end will stand more upright than the slope orientation of the current model.
The car’s profile appears lower because of the skirts and the bumpers that extend downwards. This hints that the next-gen Fit will have a more aggressive and sportier look. The Fit remains true to it being a subcompact car. It still looks small, which Honda is pressured to do so after making the Civic a much bigger car.
We don’t have enough information about the powertrains that the new-gen Fit will come with, but we believe it will probably get a gasoline and a hybrid option eventually. The gas engine might be the 1.0-liter boosted three-cylinder that Honda is using in other markets now. There is also the possibility of an all-electric version for the redesigned Fit but until we see something substantial from Honda, we’ll hold our thoughts on that.
Exploring The 4 Trim Levels Of The 2018 Honda Fit
The refreshed 2018 Honda Fit is on sale. With the official production release comes the usual updates, including an updated color palette and safety tech across all trim levels. The base model starts at $17,065, just $100 more than last year’s Honda Fit.
The powertrain will remain unchanged, however, as the new Honda Fit will still pack the same 1.5-liter inline-four engine that can produce 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. Other notable updates are the addition of two new exterior colors: Orange Fury and Helios Yellow (which will replace the Mystic Yellow). Also available are shades of white, black, gray, red, and blue. Unfortunately, purple won’t be available for this update.
1. Base LX Model
The tech coming along with the base model are 5-inch color LCD screen, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a six-speed manual transmission, versatile 60/20 split second row Magic seats, and cruise control. You can substitute for a CVT, but that would cost an additional $800. Adding the Honda Sensing will drive the price up to $18,865.
2. Sport Trim Model
For that sportier look, the Sport trim model adds the bright orange pin stripes on the exterior body, along with gloss black 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, side sill garnishes, chrome exhaust-pipe finisher, and an aggressive aero-form front spoiler and rear diffuser. The interior will be an all-black standout with orange contrast stitching. There’s also a 7-inch touchscreen display. Prices will start at $18,375 for the six-speed manual and $19,175 for the CVT. The Honda Sensing will put an extra $1,000 on top of the CVT model.
3. EX Trim Model
Aside from the usual upgrades, this trim level will also receive SiriusXM radio capability, sliding sunvisors, and push-button start. The Honda Sensing is standard on this level. It will add adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, road departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Prices start at $19,035 for the manual and $19,835 for the CVT.
4. EX-L Trim Level
The top-of-the-line Honda Fit will bring all the luxury: leather-trimmed seats and heated front seats on top of all the latest upgrades from all trim levels. Prices will start at $21,395 with the Navi package bringing that up to $22,395.
