Suzuki Jimny Copies a Brabus-Tuned Mercedes-AMG G63

We don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing (it probably depends on what end of the spectrum you are looking at) but the Suzuki Jimny has gained fame or infamy as a poor man’s Mercedes-Benz G-Class, thanks to its rather clever design.

The boxy body of the Jimny makes it an ideal candidate for a G-Class transformation. Just equip it with the iconic three-pointed star logo, front grille, spare wheel cover, and side exhaust pipes so it can easily pass as the iconic Mercedes SUV to the untrained eye. We have seen Wald International do that with the Suzuki Jimny Black Bison Edition . The only major giveaway that it is a G-Class replica is its two-door design and compact body.

Although not as masterful as Wald, the Russian website Kolesa recently released a rendering of the Jimny with G-Class elements, which could become the basis of future tuning packages for the Suzuki compact SUV. The Jimny can be seen sporting new bumpers, hood scoop, exhaust system, and wheels. It should be noted that the four exhaust pipes of the Jimny have been equally distributed on each of its sides similar to the Mercedes SUV.

The source claimed that they took inspiration from the Brabus version of the G-Class called the G V12 900, so one might say that it is not Mercedes that is being infringed here. As a recap, the tuning package took out the V8 engine of the G-Class and replaced it with a V12 engine capable of producing up to 900 hp as its name implies.

Although tuners might not be able to squeeze out that ridiculous amount of power from the Jimny, we would love to see them give its 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine a boost way past its original 101 hp configuration.

3 Things You Need To Know About The Black Bison 2019 Suzuki Jimny

The Suzuki Jimny is an adored rugged little retro-styled SUV that has managed to retain its “cuteness” over the years. Wald International has come up with more than just a body kit for the Jimny. Called the Back Bison Edition, the Jimny looks menacing, rough, and old school.

1. Exterior

At the front, the Back Bison Edition looks quite different from the regular Jimny. The welding, cuts, shut lines, and creases look particularly different. Wald International even added twin hood scoops. The side profile is still boxy and the flared-up wheel arches look like they come from Mercedes-Benz G-wagon sports. Adding new heights to the tuned-up Jimny are bigger tires and wheels.

2. Interior

It looks like Wald International didn’t do anything in the cabin, so the Jimny will still have the stock interior. But even if the exterior is a little more rugged, the interior should still be refined and on par with the hatchback segments. Suzuki is known for its practical and ergonomic cabins.

3. Drivetrain

Again, the tuner didn’t change anything with the Jimny’s drivetrain. The changes are entirely physical. The lift made no change to the powertrain. So at this point, we can expect it to have a 1.2-liter four-cylinder K series engine that makes 89 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission with all-wheel-drive. It is also available with a four-speed automatic gearbox.

Although the Japanese tuner didn’t do anything about the interior and the drivetrain, that’s not the biggest deal-breaker here. The sad thing about the Jimny is the US market won’t get it. Since the off-road scene in the US is pretty strong, Suzuki could sell a few hundred thousands of units here.

Suzuki Jimny Transformed Into a Baby Mercedes G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class mashes the old school design of sport utility vehicles with the modern day’s premium automotive technology. However, is very pricey. The cost of the iconic Mercedes sport utility vehicle starts at $124,500 for its base G550 model while its Mercedes-AMG G63 trim is at least $147,500. Luckily, we have the new Suzuki Jimny with an introductory price of $23,990 that’s unofficially referred to as the “Baby G-Class”.

The cheaper price tag of the Jimny makes its platform a favorite of tuners who are looking to make a G-Class replica. Recently, the Dubai-based Fast Car Service Center did just that. They turned the compact SUV into a smaller, two-door version of the Mercedes-AMG G63.

The Middle Eastern tuner certainly did a great job in customizing the Jimny that one might easily mistake it as the high-performance model of G-Class at a glance. Then again, the two door frame and smaller dimensions of the Suzuki baby SUV would tell otherwise.

The Jimny was given a Panamericana grille design with vertical slats similar to the signature look of the latest AMG cars. Next, it was equipped with huge air intakes, LED lights, side steps, exhausts, mirror caps, and spare wheel cover resembling the ones found in the AMG G63 SUV. Even the contrasting body line of the G-Class was carried over to the Jimny.

Despite the badass changes to the Jimny, it seems the tuner did nothing to increase its output since there was no mention of it. With that, we assume that the small 1.3-liter engine of the compact SUV with 100 hp was retained by the specialist.

New Suzuki Jimny Gets Measly 3 Stars From Euro NCAP Results

The latest batch of Euro NCAP results has been released where both the Audi A6 and Volkswagen Touareg got the maximum rating of five stars. The Ford Tourneo Connect scored four, but the new  Suzuki Jimny got a measly three stars.

The Jimny, which was received positively by the market, received a low score because of its adult occupation protection which was only at 73 percent. The test found out that the driver’s airbag will not quite inflate with enough pressure to stop the driver’s head from hitting the steering wheel rim. There is also a potential for deformity around the front door pillars in the front offset impact test. This resulted in a weak score for the driver’s torso. The front seats are only offering “marginal protection” in the event of a rear impact.

Child protection got a rating of 84 percent but scores were low in the vulnerable road users category because of stiff windscreen pillars. The lowest marks received came from safety tech category. The Jimny even got a horrid 50 percent based on the fact that its autonomous emergency braking system struggled to spot pedestrians in low light. It cannot detect cyclists as well.

Based on the NCAP results, the Audi A6 is the safest car with an adult occupant protection rating of 93 percent and a vulnerable road users percentage of 81. In terms of child protection and safety assist categories, the Touareg slightly outscored the A6. It got 86 percent on the child protection and 81 percent of the vulnerable road users. The Audi A6, on the other hand, got 85 and 76 percent, respectively.

The Ford Tourneo Connect got 92 percent on the adult occupant score but was awarded a four-star rating because it only got a 65-percent rating on the vulnerable road users category.

2019 Suzuki Jimny Is A Cute Little Off-Roader

suzuki jimny (1)

The production run of the third-generation Suzuki Jimny—the lone, pint-sized, affordable off-roader in the market—is over after nearly two decades. Here comes the fourth-generation of this cute little thing, which is going to be a 2019 model.

We know, it appears slightly like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class , and why not? It seems like the G-Class is now the automotive world’s standard for compact off-roaders. The Jimny’s new design is actually reminiscent of the first-generation Jimny that was introduced back in 1970. The boxy grille and round headlights are the same, but the spare-tire mount at the rear may be the reason why this model is being compared to the G-Class.

You may not notice the huge similarities with the luxurious G-Class when you look at the Jimny from the front and sides, but the two models have their commonalities when seen from the back.

Suzuki has not released the specifications for the Jimny yet, but it will likely come in single- and two-tone exterior colors. There’s going to be a trim made of a Kinetic Yellow hue, so that’s going to be cool.

Once inside, the SUV transforms into a rather “utilitarian” machine with a basic setup but plenty of functions. Buttons, dials, and switches are aplenty, so drivers would not be left wanting in terms of tinkering with the infotainment display. Speaking of which, there’s a touchscreen unit on top of the center stack, but the instrument cluster will be populated by analog dials.

According to Suzuki, the 2019 Jimny will have a ladder frame chassis, three-link suspension, and a low-range transfer box to complement its 4×4 driving system. There is no information yet about the engines that will power the Jimny, but we expect a manual gearbox in its transmission.

When Suzuki exited from the United States in 2012, it looked like we’ve seen the last of it. The Jimny won’t find its way back to American soil. Around the world, it has sold 2.85 million units.

Things We Saw In The 2018 Suzuki Jimny Leaks

2018 suzuki-jimny (5)

To say that the Suzuki Jimny is so doggone cute is an understatement. If you want the “look” of a Jeep Wrangler but don’t have the cash for it, the Jimny is your next best thing. It’s affordable, but it managed to perform well and look good as well (though the last one is debatable).

Do you know that Mercedes-Benz wants to have a mini version of its G-Class? However, they still don’t have it, probably because it’s too expensive to make. Well, it looks like Suzuki not only has the same thing in mind, they actually outperformed the German brand by releasing the model.

G-Class Lookalike

Don’t fret. The Japanese automaker’s upgrade of the Jimny is every inch a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, minus the badge, of course. Mercedes fans will be happy to know that Suzuki didn’t exactly copy what the G-Class looks like. If you already saw the previous generation Jimny, you know that this particular model is influenced by the Japanese brand. It has boxy lines and round headlights—features that belong to the original Jimny.

Oh, just before you begin to question it, the Jimny predates the G-Class.

Nothing Extraordinary

There is no official information yet on what the new Jimny will come packing with. In previous generations, Suzuki’s subcompact SUV rode on a body-on-frame platform. If the leaks are reliable, this is what we’ll probably find in the new generation, as well as the choice of either 2- or 4-wheel-drive. Experts believe that Suzuki will delve into the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine for the Jimny. This is the same engine that debuted in the 2018 Suzuki Swift Sport.

The engine can produce 140 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.

The October 2017 Tokyo Motor Show looks to be the perfect opportunity for Suzuki to introduce its new Jimny. But US residents may not be able to take a glimpse of the new Jimny. Remember Suzuki exited the US market back in 2012?
