Programs & Services

The Somerset Council on Aging strives to deliver the highest quality services to all senior citizens in our community. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. 

Programs & Services Provided by the Council on Aging

  • Transportation- Medical Transportation is Monday through Friday > First pick up 8:00 am Last pick up 2:00 pm
  • Thursday Transportationto Stop and Shop > Pick up starts between 8 to 8:30 am 
  • On the first Thursday of every month, there is also a trip to Walmart

Caregiver Support Group 

All caregivers every second and fourth Monday of the month from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, come join us in the kitchen of the COA to find support in a warm and comforting environment. Light refreshments will be served.

Shine Counseling 

Medicare and Insurance assistance call our office to schedule an appointment!

  • Open enrollmentto make changes to your current health plan is a very BIG time of the year for many seniors. These appointments start in October. Do notwait to call if you are looking to make changes appointments fill up quickly and it is  by appointment only!Somerset residents do have a preference

Durable Medical Equipment 

Our durable medical equipment program loans various medical devices and supplies to seniors at no cost. This program is run by donations so supplies can vary. Items that are typically offered include wheelchairs, walkers, canes, shower benches, bed rails, transfer tub seats, adult briefs, etc. Please don’t hesitate to call if you are in need or would like to donate.

Fuel Assistance

The Fuel Assistance program will assist in paying heating bills for low-income individuals and families for the winter months (Nov.1 through April 30) Please call the COA for further information. (During the application period please call to make an appointment if you are a new applicant) 

SNAP 

The COA will assist seniors with applications. (This program helps with the purchase of food) Please call the COA for more info.  

Recreational Activities

Mind and Body Wellness

Exercise with Lynne 

Join us every Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. and Wednesday at 9:30 am for a fun aerobic-style exercise program. This program features lights weights and even some dancing. Classes are $3, all are welcome.

Tai Chi with Jamie

Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:05 a.m. for a slow-paced Tai Chi class taught by Sifi Jamie McGuire. Classes are $3, all are welcome.

Zumba

Come on down!!Serena Honeycutt is here every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. This class offers a fun and energetic vibe to our seniors who love music and Love to dance all while exercising! Class is $3.00, all are welcome.

Tai-Yo-ba

(25 people max) Every Mondayafternoon from 12:45 pm to 1:30 p.m. and Friday morning at 9:10 a.m. Please join us! This program offers an upbeat and exciting class, that focuses on balance and building strength all while sitting. A great class to join with a friend after lunch or to start any Friday! This class is $3.00. 

Osteoporosis

Every Monday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. This class is run by a wonderful group of seniors who have been exercising at the COA for years! They focus on areas affected by osteoporosis. This class is free but does require a doctor’s clearance.

Line Dancing

Join us in the good times every Thursday from 11:15 to 12:00 as Kim Berube teaches us some super fun line dancing!

Experienced Mahjongg -Every Monday and Thursday at 10:00 am
Bridge-Every Tuesday @ 9:30
Canasta- Every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. 
Knitting/Crafts-Every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. 
Bingo-Every Tuesday and Friday at 12:00 $2.00 ($5.00 Bingo every 1st and 3rd Friday of every month)
Puzzles/Books-Join us anytime Monday- Friday available to borrow or to stay and enjoy the company of others

Monthly Events

  • Movie Day- The COA offers free movies every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. All movies start at 12:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). There is popcorn, candy, and drinks to purchase for you to enjoy during the show as well. Please pick up a monthly newsletter at the Council on Aging to see our upcoming movies each month. 
  • Watercolor Painting Classes with Sue Greco-Do you want to learn how to paint? Sue has been coming to the Somerset COA for over a year now and our seniors just can't get enough of her class. Her passion for painting even the simplest pictures shows how much she cares for art. Just When You Think You Aren't a Great Painter, You Will Be Very Surprised! This Is a Class for All, Whether It's Your First Time or Your 100th Time It's All About Having Fun and Doing Something New! Space Is Limited for Each Class, Only 20 Seats Available Per Class!!  Please Call the COA to Register if You Are Interested. All Are Welcome!! ClassesAre Always on a Thursday From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Dates Are Listed Below;

  • The Council on Aging hosts luncheons and educational presentations throughout the year, please stop by and see what we have going on!!!!
