Boat Excise

Excise Taxes - Boats/Watercrafts

Excise tax bills for boats are mailed in April and cover 7/1 of the prior year through 6/30 of the current year (Ex: July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021). Similar to motor vehicle excise, we receive boat excise tax from the State.

If you sold your boat you can apply for an abatement. You'll need proof of the sale (such as a bill of sale, trade-in paperwork, etc.) and proof you have canceled the registration of the boat. If you do not cancel the registration, you may continue receiving excise bills in future years. There is also a form you should fill out and send to the Environmental Police so they can remove your boat from their database.

If your boat's value appears incorrect you should check that the year and length of your boat are correctly listed on your bill. The value of your boat is set by state law and is based purely on the age and length of the boat (see chart below).

Please call the Assessor's office if you have any questions or find an error on your bill at 508-646-2824.
