Using crayons to decorate Easter Eggs! This is so fun! It seems crazy that you can use crayons to dye Easter Eggs but it’s true! Actually.. it’s semi true. You’re not using crayons to dye the eggs, you’re using the heat of the egg to melt the wax in the crayon which leaves a really pretty decoration on the egg.  No matter what, I still think this is a better option than dying eggs. Here’s the truth – I hate dyeing easter eggs.  It doesn’t matter how many towels you put down someone’s going to spill the color and it’s going to go everywhere. Then the kids are going to fight over who gets the pink dye first. If you put down several cups of pink dye, they’ll all want the green dye and you’ll only have one cup of that.  Then it never fails that your pretty easter pictures of the whole family will also show multicolored dyed fingers.  Save yourself the dye trouble this year and try out melted crayon easter eggs.  It can be as simple as giving them each a warm egg (bonus for not having to let the eggs cool first!) and letting them draw on the eggs with crayons or you can take it a step further and make something truly beautiful.

Use Crayon Shavings to Decorate Easter Eggs

crayon craftsStart with crayons. I bought a new box because I love how a brand new box of crayons look but you can grab those old broken pieces and they will work just as well.crayon shavingsPeel off part of the crayon label and use an old cheese shredder or knife to carefully make crayon shavings. Do not use your good cheese shredder because you will never get all the crayon off of it.  Be careful and do not let children use the knife to make the shavings. easter eggs for kidsHere’s the kicker – You need hot eggs. As soon as they are done boiling, dry them off and put them on a bottle cap on a surface where they can stay until the melted crayon has set. The bottle cap helps hold them up. Please watch kids while handling the hot eggs.  While the egg is still hot, start sprinkling the crayon shavings on top of the egg and then watch the magic start.easter egg ideasPress a few shavings around the edges and bottom of the egg. They will stick and then slowly start to melt.melted crayon easter eggsLet the egg sit for a few minutes while the crayons melt.  After a minute or two gently remove any unmelted pieces. Fun Easter Egg ideasThis is a different egg that I first rolled in the crayon shavings and then placed shavings on the top and sides. They crayons didn’t melt as well since it was already cooling but I really liked the finished results.  Then when you’re done you’ll have beautiful eggs that are ready for a lively (shady) egg hunt.  How are you making eggs this year?  Don’t forget that you can also try out making marbled easter eggs using butter or marbling them with shaving cream .  You can also check out this big list of easter egg ideas How to make easter eggs with crayons
