The Somerset Fire Department, with the assistance of Somerset TRIAD, announced the creation of the "Somerset Cares" program.

This program will consist of scheduled home visits to our senior citizens by Somerset Firefighters. Firefighters will conduct a safety check of the home and assess the surroundings for various potential hazards. This program is free.

The focus of the visits centers on a needs assessment, medical identification/information program, trip and fall prevention, home heating safety, bathroom safety, cooking safety, ensuring adequate lighting, and checking/installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Firefighters will also do blood pressure checks.

Firefighters Offer Certain Supplies at No Cost When Needed.

  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Batteries (includes installation)
  • Assorted light bulbs
  • Night Lights and extra bulbs
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Fire Safety Informational pamphlets
  • A file of the Life packet
  • Yellow Alert packet
  • Other supplies as required

The "Somerset Cares" program is designed to be an expandable program that will allow the future integration of Community Paramedicine (also known as Mobile Health Care). Federal changes to the healthcare system will create the need for more out-of-hospital healthcare with the goal of keeping patients out of the hospital, especially the Emergency Department, whenever possible. Patients may be better served with a proactive care program that serves the residents within the confines of their own homes. Somerset Fire Department Paramedics and EMTs stand ready to participate in this expanded program once it is implemented by the Commonwealth and our local healthcare providers such as hospitals and physicians.
